Here is the description we have worked on:

5 Ways to Help Your Child Feel School-Ready!

💬 Start with curiosity, not reassurance — “What part of going back to school feels the hardest?”
Instead of saying, “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine,” make space for the feelings first. Feeling understood can make it easier for children to talk about what is underneath the worry.

🎭 Let a character do the talking — “Why do you think the little bear might be nervous about school?”
Some children find it easier to express worries indirectly through a favourite toy, puppet, character, etc. Let your child speak for the character, create a story, or act out what happens next.

🎨 Make the unknown more predictable and manageable.
Help make the transition more familiar by drawing a simple “first day map,” creating a visual routine, looking at the school schedule, or role-playing moments like saying goodbye or asking a teacher for help.

🌿 Stay grounded during the transition.
The first week back can be emotionally demanding for caregivers too. Preparing yourself to slow down, stay calm, and expect some bigger feelings can make it easier to respond rather than react.

🌱 Regulate together before expecting independence — children learn from adults!
A calm voice, slower pace, movement, breathing, or a quiet creative activity can help children settle before they are expected to problem-solve or “calm themselves down.”

The goal isn’t to remove anxiety completely, but to encourage children to think “this feels hard, but I can learn how to handle it.”

When might extra support help?

Some back-to-school nervousness is expected. If worries are persistent or begin to interfere with school attendance, daily routines, relationships, participation, or confidence, additional support may be helpful.

Art Therapy and Psychotherapy can offer developmentally appropriate ways for children to explore emotions, build coping skills, and strengthen confidence through creative expression, play, and therapeutic connection.

5 communication skills to teach your child to prepare them for school!

🆘️ Ask for help — “Can you help me?” / “I don’t understand.”
Knowing how to seek support when instructions, schoolwork, or a situation feels challenging.

👋 Connect with peers — “Can I join?” / “What are you playing?”
Having language to initiate conversations, join activities, and build friendships.

🛑 Self-advocate & set boundaries — “I don’t like that.” / “Please stop.”
Communicating discomfort, preferences, and personal boundaries clearly.

🤝 Navigate disagreements — “Can we take turns?” / “Can we figure this out?”
Using language to negotiate, problem-solve, and work through everyday peer conflicts.

💬 Express needs — “I need to use the bathroom.” / “Can you explain that again?”
Recognizing when they need something and communicating it to others.

Save this post as you get ready for the school year, and follow along for more back to school tips coming up!

Same train play, but different language models. 🚂

There isn’t one “correct” or “typical” way for children to develop language.

Some children—including many late talkers—are analytic language processors, meaning they often start with single words and gradually build longer, more complex sentences over time.

Some children are gestalt language processors (GLPs), who learn language through longer, meaningful phrases before breaking them down and creating their own flexible language.

Neither approach is better than the other—they’re simply different developmental language profiles. Understanding how a child learns language helps us provide rich, meaningful language models that match their natural learning style 💛

Not sure which language profile best describes your child? One of our trained Speech-Language Pathologists can help identify your child's unique strengths and guide the most meaningful support for communication.
