๐ŸงดRetinol, retinal, tretinoin, tazarotene, Accutane. Same family, very different jobs, and the percentage on the bottle doesnโ€™t tell you as much as youโ€™d think.

Swipe for how they actually work and how I tell people to start. The best retinoid is the one youโ€™re still using in three months.

Tomorrow on The Pretty and the Gritty๐ŸŽ™๏ธ AVERY CAMERON and I get into the skincare shelf: when โ€œmedical gradeโ€ is actually worth your money and when it isnโ€™t, plus the trends everyoneโ€™s asking us about and what the evidence says.

Filler vs. Sculptra: whatโ€™s the goal?

Think of your face like a mattress. Over time, the springs (collagen) weaken, and the frame (bone) changes (among other things).

Filler can help restore volume and support, while Sculptra works differently โ€” stimulating your body to gradually build its own collagen.

One gives more immediate results. The other takes time.

Neither is necessarily better. Itโ€™s about understanding what your skin actually needs.
Letโ€™s break it down. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

I end up telling this history more often than youโ€™d think in my clinic, so I thought Iโ€™d share it here. Weโ€™re taking it all the way back to basics.

BoNT/A stands for botulinum neurotoxin, serotype A. Botoxยฎ, Dysportยฎ, Xeominยฎ,Nuceivaยฎ and Letyboยฎ are all the same molecule from different companies.

Itโ€™s the same toxin that causes botulism. Scientists purified it in the early 1900s, it became medicine in the 1950s for muscles that wonโ€™t stop contracting, and by the 1970s ophthalmologists were using it for misaligned eyes.

Then, Dr Jean Carruthers (Dr Jean Carruthers | Carruthers Cosmetic), an ophthalmologist in Vancouver ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ, saw her blepharospasm patientsโ€™ frown lines soften by happy coincidence. She and Dr Alastair Carruthers published the first study in 1992, and the rest is history.

Fifty years on itโ€™s the most reliable thing we have. One job, done well. Why that job can stop feeling like enough in your forties is episode one of The Pretty and the Gritty, link in bio.

๐Ÿ’‰Aesthetic Medicine is ๐๐จ๐ญ a Service

I want to repost something I said a long time ago that I so firmly stand by that it deserves a second round ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

I recently (last night) read an article that deeply resonated with my practice philosophy in medical aesthetics. While healthcare has positively moved towards collaborative treatment plans between practitioner and patient, those seeking aesthetic treatments are often seen (or see themselves) as โ€œconsumersโ€ rather than โ€œpatientsโ€, much more so than those undergoing other medical treatments. While its natural to want to choose and actively seek out a particular treatment, I believe its crucial to shift the mindset.

Hereโ€™s why:
Aesthetic treatments are minimally invasive medical procedures, not services. The process isnโ€™t about a โ€œmenuโ€ of servicesโ€”itโ€™s a itโ€™s a collaborative plan that takes into account the patientโ€™s unique medical history, lifestyle, values, goals, expectations, and the evidence-based practices that are most likely to lead to the best outcomes. Itโ€™s a plan rooted in safety and expertise.

โœจTrust is key. My role is to blend your preferences with my clinical judgment, ensuring your treatment is not only effective but also aligns with your natural beauty and long-term health.

As your practitioner, I am here to guide, educate, and support youโ€”because the best outcomes come from a partnership built on understanding and respect.

Letโ€™s embrace aesthetic medicine as the serious, empowering, and transformative field that it is. ๐Ÿ’–

Your tox didnโ€™t stop working.

Itโ€™s doing exactly what it did the first time you had it. The thing that changed is the skin on top of the muscle, and thatโ€™s a handful of extra problems your tox was never treating.

So before anyone puts more units in your face, someone should look at your skin.

The average person lives with one of these for 21 months. From a spot that was there four days. ๐Ÿ”ด

You didnโ€™t add that dark spot by squeezing. Your skin made it on purpose. Letโ€™s break down post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation together!
