Today, our hearts are heavy at ANFCA as we grieve and honor the extraordinary life and timeless spirit of Kukom Linda Boudreau Semaganis, a cherished matriarch, leader, and guiding light for all of us.

Kukom Linda was a foundational pillar within the Friendship Centre Movement, serving with grace, strength, and unwavering dedication as the Alberta Senator for the National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) and a deeply respected elder for the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA). She carried an aura that felt truly timeless, offering a steady, gentle presence through every shift and season.

Her life’s work was rooted in deep love for her people and an fierce commitment to justice. She was a vital advocate in addressing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+), ensuring that the voices of our women were heard, protected, and honored. Through her advocacy, wisdom, and practice of true relationship, she uplifted generations and helped shape the path forward for urban Indigenous communities across Alberta and Turtle Island.

For the ANFCA staff and all who worked alongside her, the space she leaves behind is profound and irreplaceable. Her laughter, humour, gentle guidance, and quiet power will be missed beyond measure in our hearts.

We extend our deepest condolences, prayers, and love to her family, loved ones, and community. May her spirit journey in peace and comfort, and may her legacy continue to guide us as we walk the trail she helped clear.

Kukom Linda. You will be forever loved, remembered, and missed

What are you really trying to say?

Many people focus on the visible reaction:

“I got angry.”
“I shut down.”
“I pushed too hard.”
“I avoided the conversation.”
“I said yes when I meant no.”
“I felt guilty for needing support.”

But therapy often asks a different question:

What was the need underneath the reaction?

Anger may point to a boundary.
Withdrawal may point to overwhelm.
People-pleasing may point to fear of rejection.
Guilt may point to old expectations.
Pressure may point to a need for reassurance.
Criticism may point to feeling unseen or unimportant.

The goal is not to shame the reaction.
The goal is to understand it before it causes more damage.

Before asking “Why did I react that way?” try asking:

“What need was I struggling to express?”

Uncertainty often ramps up stress and drives people to overcontrol—overthinking, seeking reassurance, withdrawing, or preparing for every outcome—because the nervous system is trying to create safety. Therapy can help them build tolerance for uncertainty, regulate anxiety, and respond more flexibly; book online counselling with Caleb Anacker, RCSW (clients 13+ in AB, ON, NS): anackercounselling.com | 780-645-2330

Many coping strategies start as protection.

Avoidance may protect from conflict.
People-pleasing may protect from rejection.
Anger may protect from feeling powerless.
Numbness may protect from overwhelm.
Control may protect from uncertainty.

These responses are not random. They usually make sense in context.

The problem is that protective patterns can become automatic, rigid, and costly.

Therapy helps people understand these patterns and build more choice.
