Noticing changes in your child and wondering if it’s anxiety? You’re not alone - and there are clear, compassionate steps you can take today. Common early signs: trouble sleeping or nightmares, avoiding school or activities, frequent tummy aches or headaches, increased irritability or clinginess. What you can do right now: offer calm reassurance, keep routines steady, gently name feelings (“I see you’re worried”), limit big decisions when they’re overwhelmed, and teach a simple grounding breath together. When to seek extra help: symptoms that persist or worsen, interfere with school or friendships, or cause intense distress - that’s a good time to connect with a professional. At Phoenix & Feather we use Crystal Heaver’s evidence-informed, developmental approach combined with local practice in Salmon Arm to provide practical, family-centred support. If you’d like a first step toward relief and connection, we’re here to help. Learn more: https://wix.to/2zhT3Ey

Parents: here are three simple, evidence-informed regulation tools you can teach your child today to ease anxiety and overwhelm. 1) Grounding exercise - For toddlers: name 3 things you see; for school-aged: use senses to describe textures and sounds; for teens: 5-4-3-2-1 sensory countdown. Why it helps: brings attention to the present and lowers physiological arousal. 2) 3-step breathing - For little ones: bubble breaths (slow big breaths); school-aged: breathe in for 3, hold 1, out for 4; teens: box breathing (4-4-4-4). Why it helps: regulates the nervous system and creates a pause. 3) Playful movement break - For preschoolers: animal walks or shake-it-out dances; school-aged: short obstacle course or stretching with silly sounds; teens: quick active set (jumping jacks, wall push-ups). Why it helps: releases built-up energy and resets mood. For ongoing support in Salmon Arm, we offer child-centred, play-based guidance and practical strategies for families at Phoenix & Feather. 🍎 Back-to-School Check-In

Back-to-school season is almost here, and while that can bring excitement, it can also bring some pretty big feelings, for kids and parents. 💛

New classrooms, changing friendships, school anxiety, routines, confidence, emotional regulation, homework battles... every family seems to have its own version of the back-to-school juggle.

As I plan for the upcoming school year at Phoenix & Feather Counselling, I’m considering offering some small groups and workshops alongside individual counselling and parent/family support and I’d love to hear directly from local families about what would actually be helpful.

Some ideas I’m considering include:

• Anxiety & back-to-school confidence
• Big feelings & emotional regulation
• Friendship and social skills
• Confidence & self-esteem
• ADHD-friendly coping and regulation skills
• Parent support & practical strategies
• Parent-child connection workshops
• Coping with change and transitions

Would a small group or workshop be something you or your child would be interested in?

And even more importantly, what topic would you actually want to see offered?

Drop an idea in the comments or send me a private message. There are no wrong suggestions! I’d much rather build groups around what families genuinely need than guess. 🌱

Grow. Empower. Rise.

Summer transitions can be gentle with the right support. I’m Crystal Heaver from Phoenix & Feather, and I’ve put together simple, evidence-informed strategies to help families in Salmon Arm and the Shuswap navigate changes in routine, childcare shifts, and unstructured days. Notice these signs a child may be struggling: increased meltdowns, sleep changes, withdrawal, or sudden aggression. Try one small structure to start: a predictable morning rhythm (wake, breakfast, short outdoor play, choice activity) and a simple visual schedule you update together each day. Most importantly, name their feelings, validate them, and offer one practical step—“I see you’re frustrated. Let’s take three deep breaths, then choose between drawing or a walk.” These are play-based, child-centred ideas I use with families to build calm and connection. Feeling overwhelmed when your child melts down? Try a single, adaptable breathing exercise you can use from preschool to teen years — and see calmer evenings, smoother transitions, and better sleep. For preschoolers: use a stuffed animal on their belly and count five slow breaths together. For school-age kids: try “bubble breaths” — inhale for 4, hold 2, exhale slowly while pretending to blow a big bubble. For teens: practice box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) and invite them to track sensations without judgment. At Phoenix & Feather, we weave evidence-informed, developmentally attuned techniques like this into our counselling so families in Salmon Arm and the Shuswap get practical tools that actually work. Summer brings freedom — and big feelings. At Phoenix & Feather, we see how sleep shifts, changing routines, and separation worries can leave children and parents feeling overwhelmed. One simple, evidence-informed technique to try at home: create a short daily “anchor” ritual—5–10 minutes of predictable connection (a check-in question, a calming breath together, or a quick playful activity) at the same time each day. This steady cue helps regulate emotions, rebuilds routine, and gives kids a safe moment to share worries. If you’re in Salmon Arm and the Shuswap, we’re here to support your family through these transitions. Learn more and book a consult: https://wix.to/vxO0Xf7 . Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the histories, cultures, traditions, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

At Phoenix & Feather Counselling, we acknowledge that we live and work on the traditional territory of the Secwépemc people. My own heritage includes Indigenous ancestry, and it has strengthened my appreciation for the importance of culture, connection, identity, and the stories we carry with us.

May today be an opportunity to listen, learn, reflect, and celebrate.

ADHD is not laziness — it’s a difference in how a child’s brain organizes attention and energy. At Phoenix & Feather, we reframe strengths like curiosity, creativity, and intense focus as assets, not flaws. One practical tip: try a visual schedule with short movement breaks between tasks — it supports transitions and reduces overwhelm. Our creative, developmentally appropriate supports, guided by Crystal Heaver’s evidence-informed approach, help families find real, compassionate strategies. Summer brings freedom — and big shifts for kids. If your family is feeling the overwhelm, here’s a simple checklist to keep things steady: 1) Keep two anchors: a predictable morning ritual and a calming bedtime routine. 2) Add one fun micro-routine each day (a 5–10 minute walk, a shared joke, or a quick creative prompt). 3) Pick one friendship strategy for the break (a weekly playdate, a short video check-in, or a shared challenge). At Phoenix & Feather, we blend child-focused, developmentally informed support with practical coaching to help families transition with more ease. We’re offering short-term coaching and check-ins in Salmon Arm to help you plan a summer that feels manageable and joyful. Ready to get a simple plan in place?
