FREE breastfeeding support TOMORROW in Sherwood Park from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Maple Room at the Strathcona County Library!

We don't sell anything, there is no cost or commitment involved.

We are a non-profit, volunteer led, international organization focused on peer-to-peer breastfeeding support for families.

Our meetings are conversational and informal. You can ask questions and share your experiences related to breastfeeding, pumping, infant behavior, sleep, introducing solids, weaning, and returning to work in a safe environment.

We LOVE building community! Bring your kids, a friend, neighbour, sister, partner, support person, etc!!

There's no such thing as being underdressed or late 😊

Obstetrics emerged from midwifery—not the other way around.
When male physicians entered the birth space in the 18th–19th centuries, they:

Learned by observing midwives
Adopted midwifery techniques
Added surgical tools (like forceps)
Medicalized and institutionalized birth
This shift was driven by professional politics, not evidence.

🌿 Nuchal Cord Facts
🟢 1. Nuchal cords are extremely common
Occur in 20–30% of all births

That’s 1 in 4 babies

Most are loose and cause no problems

🟢 2. They are usually not dangerous
A nuchal cord is simply the cord around the baby’s neck.
Because of Wharton’s jelly and the cord’s structure, blood flow is usually well‑protected.

🟢 3. They rarely cause emergencies
A nuchal cord becomes concerning only if it causes:

significant cord compression

repetitive variable decelerations

signs of fetal distress

This is uncommon.

🟢 4. They are not a reason for induction or cesarean
Evidence shows:

Nuchal cords are not linked to stillbirth in healthy pregnancies

They are not an indication for early delivery

They are not a reason for automatic C‑section

🟢 5. Providers manage them easily at birth
Most of the time:

The cord is slipped over the baby’s head

Or the somersault maneuver is used
Both are simple, routine techniques.

🟢 6. Multiple loops are still often harmless
Even 2–3 loops can be normal.
What matters is tension, not the number of loops.

These are some of my favourite postpartum foods! Warm foods are so important after birth. Warming, deeply nourishing meals are grounding to our nervous system, improve blood flow, are easier for the body to digest and help us rebuild blood and replenish energy.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, labour is considered Qi-intensive leaving the body cold and open after birth. Warming, nourishing foods and herbs are considered very important in the postpartum period because they help rebuild and move Qi (Chi). Many cultures independently developed the same postpartum rule: rest, warmth, and cooked foods for the first 30-40 days.

Did you enjoy warm foods after birth? What was your favourite or go-to postpartum meal?

Hey there, I’m Katherine! Welcome to my page! I am SO happy to have you here! 🌷

I’m a mother, wife, doula, childbirth educator, registered massage therapist & traditional herbalist. My own birth experiences (first-hospital, second-home water birth) led me into doula work; my soul fire and my calling. ✨

I stand grounded in the knowledge that childbirth is a natural, transformative and spiritual experience that works best and is safest when undisturbed, honoured and compassionately supported. Drawing on 13 years of experience, I support families in their prenatal months through educational home visits and during labour by nurturing and guiding women to trust their bodies, instincts & inner wisdom.

I live in rural Strathcona County and support families
in Sherwood Park, Edmonton and surrounding rural areas.

I am booking into the fall of 2026. I am mostly full for spring 2026 clients but have a couple of spaces left, due date dependent! See my website link in bio to request a consultation! Lets connect! 🤍

It was such an honour to support my beautiful repeat clients in their second birth journey (and first water birth!) in April! This family is close to my heart and it is such a blessing to have walked alongside them and witnessed both their beautiful children’s emergence into this world! So grateful! 🙏🏽💕

Grateful to share these beautiful pictures from a client’s recent birth at Lucina Birth Centre. This first time mama tuned into her body and had an undisturbed, mother directed labour and water birth. What a magical night this was!! 💜✨💚

💡 Exciting Study Alert! 💡

A recent clinical trial published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing shows the powerful impact of the Spinning Babies® approach!

When labor and delivery nurses at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Florida adopted our techniques, their cesarean rate dropped from 27% to 14%. 🙌

This study reinforces the importance of supporting the body’s natural alignment and movement to create smoother, more balanced birth experiences. When birth professionals are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, we can reduce interventions and improve outcomes for both parents and babies.

📚 You can read more about the research backing the Spinning Babies® approach on our research and references page via link in bio
