At Slater & Associates Counselling & Psychotherapy Clinic, perinatal loss and infertility are causes we hold close to our hearts.

No one expects to walk this path. If you or someone you love is experiencing pregnancy loss, infant loss, or infertility, please know that you don’t have to carry it alone.

We offer a safe, compassionate space where you can share what often feels impossible to put into words. Our specially trained perinatal team understands the unique grief, uncertainty, and complexity of these experiences, and we’re here to walk alongside you with care and without judgment.

We’re also honoured to partner with Butterfly Support Network to offer free perinatal loss support groups twice each month (virtually) helping ensure support is accessible to those who need it. We also offer individual counselling, direct billing, and free 20-minute consultations.

Whether you’re looking for support today or simply wondering if counselling might help, maybe this is your sign. 🙏

Today, on 💕Valentine’s Day💕, let’s celebrate self-kindness because how we speak to ourselves matters for mental health.🌈

🧠 Research shows:
Practicing kind, positive self-talk and self-compassion is linked with better emotional well-being and lower anxiety and depression, without promoting narcissism. In fact, self-compassion predicts healthier self-relating, not inflated self‐focus.
Neff & Germer found that compassion-based interventions (which include self-kind self-talk) enhance psychological health and reduce distress.
Neff, K. D., & Germer, C. K. (2013). A pilot study and randomized controlled trial of the Mindful Self-Compassion program. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 69(1), 28–44. DOI: 10.1002/jclp.21923

We also know that negative self-talk is more than “just thinking negatively” especially in depression. People with depressive symptoms tend to engage in harsher self-criticism, which can maintain or worsen low mood and self-worth.
Self-criticism and rumination are core cognitive patterns in depression and are linked to increased symptom severity over time.
Nolen-Hoeksema, S., Wisco, B. E., & Lyubomirsky, S. (2008). Rethinking Rumination. Perspectives on Psychological Science, 3(5), 400–424. DOI: 10.1111/j.1745-6924.2008.00088.x

This Valentine’s Day, give yourself words that heal — not hurt. Talking to yourself like someone you love isn’t selfish; it’s therapeutic. If you’re ready to start learning more about improving your mental health all of our therapists have at least a Masters degree and are all registered as either an RCC, CCC, or RSW. We also direct bill to 30 insurance plans including Manulife and Pacific Blue Cross and we provide free 20 minute consults. Better mental health is just a call away: 604-796-8117
