Mental Illnesses
are . . . Significant changes in thinking, feeling, and behaviour causing distress in social, work, or family activities
Many people who have a mental illness do not want to talk about it. But mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of! It is a medical condition, just like heart disease or diabetes.
Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of your age, gender, geography, income, social status, race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, background or other aspect of cultural identity.
Mental illnesses take many forms. Some are mild and only interfere in limited ways with daily life, such as certain phobias (abnormal fears). Other mental health conditions are so severe that a person may need care in a hospital.
Just like physical illnesses, mental illnesses can be treated with individualized care, therapy, and medication that together enhance recovery and well-being

Mental Health is emotional, psychological, and emotional well-being.
Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health.
Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood, and adolescence, through adulthood.
It's important to remember that person's mental health changes over time. When the demands placed on a person exceeds their resources and coping abilities, their mental health could be impacted.

MBCT is a modified form of cognitive therapy that incorporates mindfulness practices, including present moment awareness, meditation, breathing exercises, and more
MBCT was derived from the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, the creator of the mindfulness-based stress reduction technique, which was developed for preventing relapse from recurring episodes of depression. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention is also helpful in treating: Generalized anxiety disorders, Bipolar disorder, General emotional distress, and various addictions
MBCT is normally conducted in a group setting, and in about eight meetings, you will learn meditation techniques and the basic principles of cognition, such as the relationship between the way you think and how you feel. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about your depressive condition.
On the days when there is no session, the therapist assigns homework, which includes practicing breathing exercises and mindful meditation. Recipients will also be encouraged to bring this present-moment awareness into their everyday routines, such as during meal preparation, as you eat, while you shower, or even walking.
By developing a regular meditation practice, clients can use these techniques whenever they start to feel negative thoughts coming on. When depression occurs and starts bringing up negative associations that can trigger a relapse, clients are equipped with tools that will help them replace their negative thinking with calmness, compassion, and positive action.

EMDR is a technique designed to relieve the stress associated with disturbing memories; involving the recall of specific experiences while following lateral visual stimulus
EMDR was initially developed as an individual treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it has since been applied to:
Anxiety disorders, including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders.
It is theorized that lateral eye movement helps to reduce the emotion behind such memories so that these experiences can be safely discussed, digested, and stripped of their power to trigger anxiety and avoidance.
The therapist activates a disturbing memory by asking the patient to visualize or experience thoughts, feelings, or body sensations related to the event. Once a memory is activated, the therapist assesses the level of negative feelings and thoughts regarding the event as well as positive beliefs about oneself the patient wishes to bolster, and then administers the bilateral visual stimulation.
Patients may experience some emotional and physical discomfort while recalling distressing memories. As new feelings and thoughts emerge and are discussed, the therapist samples the level and nature of emotional and cognitive distress and any somatic distress. Sessions end when the patient feels manageably calm, and are guvdn instructions on how to handle disturbing thoughts and feelings between sessions

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is is a structured program with a strong emphasis on providing education and skills for managing intense emotions and negotiating social relationships
DBT divides its skills into four
categories including:
1. Mindfulness
2. Emotion Regulation
3. Distress Tolerance
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness
DBT was originally developed to treat the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients, and is also the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, emotion dysregulation, and many other psychiatric conditions.
DBT can be used to treat a number of
mental disorders including:
Personality disorders, Self-harm
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Bulimia, Binge-eating disorder
Depression, Anxiety
Substance use disorder
Bipolar disorder
DBT incorporates many of the techniques incognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It helps patients recognize and challenge various forms of distorted thinking that underlies negative feelings and prompt unproductive behavior.
Many elements of the therapy are aimed at teaching patients how to recognize, understand, label, and regulate their emotions and how to handle interpersonal situations that give rise to negative or painful emotions

"We as a culture seem to be dedicated to the idea that ‘negative’ human emotions need to be fixed, managed, or changed—not experienced as part of a whole life. We are treating our own lives as problems to be solved as if we can sort through our experiences for the ones we like and throw out the rest," Steven C. Hayes
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of CBT that teaches clients how to stop avoidance and denial toward their inner emotions and accept deeper feelings as appropriate psychological responses
ACT is an action orientated method of psychotherapy that focuses on self-talk about trauma, relationships, boundaries, and more. ACT aims to expand mental flexibility, emotional openness, and cognitive adaptiveness to help clients better identify and achieve their values and goals.
ACT follows six core principles:
1. Acceptance of Thought and Emotion
2. Cognitive Defusion of Stressful thoughts
3. Being Present in the Moment
4. Self in Context of Identity
5. Values of Personality and Principles
6. Committed Action to Change
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) was developed by Hayes for his panic attacks, but can be used to treat a number of mental and physical disorders including:
Anxiety, Chronic Pain, Depression, Eating Disorders, Insomnia, Obsessive Complusive Disorder (OCD), Occupational Stress, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Psychosis, Substance Use Disorders, and more!
