Sometimes, emotions feel so big that we either react to them immediately or try to push them away completely.

But emotions are not always something to fight with or ignore.

Sometimes, they may be asking us to slow down long enough to better understand ourselves, what matters to us, and what we may need moving forward.

Your emotions are not trying to overwhelm you, they are trying to get your attention.

Underneath the frustration, the anxiety, the sudden shutdown, there is usually something asking to be heard. A need you have been pushing past. A fear that has been building. Something that hurt and never really had space to land.

Most of us learned to push emotions away or let them take over.

Sometimes the emotion we can reach most easily is not the one that needs the most attention.

Anger can be real and valid, while still pointing toward something deeper underneath.

I shared more on this in our newest article, When Anger Is Not the Whole Story, now live in the new Resources section on our website.

A space for thoughtful articles, practical reflections, and supportive insights on therapy, emotional wellbeing, and the patterns that shape how we respond.

Noticing is not always immediate.
Sometimes, we only recognize what we were feeling, needing, or carrying after the moment has already passed. And that’s okay.

The practice of noticing is not about getting it perfect in real time. Sometimes, it’s simply about creating enough space to better understand ourselves with a little more curiosity and a little less judgment.

Some struggles don’t always show up in obvious ways.

Mental Health Awareness Month can be a reminder to notice the quieter signs, understand the patterns, and recognise when something may need more attention.

POV: the session starts with work stress and somehow ends with a 7-year-old who learned to stay quiet, be helpful, and never need too much.

Sometimes, our emotions get so loud that they take over before we even realise it.

Then later, we’re left replaying what we said or did and wondering, “why did I react like that?”

In those moments, it can be really hard to slow things down enough to notice what’s happening underneath the reaction.

But sometimes, even a small pause to get curious about what we might be feeling or needing, can create a little more space to respond differently.

Therapy is still a professional relationship, of course.
But it’s also a very human one.

A lot of people are surprised to find that sessions can include laughter, awkward metaphors, pets making unexpected appearances and moments that feel far less formal than they expected.

You do not have to show up perfectly to be supported.

Come as you are. Truly.

A lot of people think they need to be completely sure before reaching out for therapy.

Sure it will help.
Sure what they’re feeling is “serious enough.”
Sure they know exactly what to say.

But sometimes, therapy begins with simply being open to talking things through.

You do not need to have everything figured out before a first conversation.
