3️⃣ strikes and this tooth is OUT!
The only option for this tooth ex extraction.
HOWEVER, many “slab” fractures can be ‘saved’ with Root Canal Treatment +\- a full mental crown.
These fractures of the maxillary fourth premolar are ALWAYS caused my chewing on something harder than enamel, BUT come in many, many variations.
Comment “SLAB” for my client to fixation handout on these fractures.

THIS. IS. ATTRITION. OCCLUSION MATTERS.
This sweet rescue girl found her furever home and her new family noticed things didn’t look quite right.
This right mandibular canine (as well as her left) has severe attrition (this double “T” means Tooth-on-Tooth) due to her Class 1 malocclusion.
On the 4th slide you can see the diastema between her maxillary (she is in dorsal recumbency) is TOO NARROW for the mandibular canine to occlude without contact.
This malocclusion has led to severe attrition until the mandibular canine was narrow enough to fit.
This severe attrition led to pulp exposure of her right (but not left) canine.
Pulp exposure REQUIRES treatment as exposure will led to pulpitis and then pulp necrosis.
We discussed with Root Canal Treatment and extraction as the two options for this tooth, and given all the factors at play with this tooth, her other teeth, her lifestyle etc extraction was elected.
Did you get the dispose right?!?

Ready to NOT hate bisecting and technique?!?
Great radiographs CAN be simple and fast!
Make the angle between your patient’s teeth and the plate (sensor) 90° and then your bisecting angle is 45°
BOTH are easier to see without checking the angle AND if you rotate your patient’s head 45° when they are in dorsal recumbency NOW the bisecting angle is a vertical line, so your tube has comes in horizontally OR parallel to the table!
NO protractors needed!!! 🤓
What do you think???💭

Post-extraction radiographs should be a NON-negotiable!
You can never be 100% without them, and it’s just not worth risking an incomplete job.

TEETH MATTER!!! Occlusion tells you SO MUCH!
Don’t let the excitement of using your number 2 ✏️ screw your oral and maxillofacial exam and assessment.
While this cat’s inability to close his mouth, as well as our inability, made us think about a TMJ luxation and open mouth lockjaw (lateralization of the coronoid). .. it was ultimately a luxated mandibular molar responsible!

Truly my BIGGEST tip is get yourself a pair of loupes!
You have 42 (🐶) or 30 (🐱) TINY patients every time you are doing dental work. .. YOU GOTTA be able to SEE what you are doing.
Loupes provide both MAGNIFICATION and LIGHT.
And 💡 focused on the area you are working in AND at the angle at which you are looking.
Want the loupes but don’t have the 💰??
Get an adjustable pair that can be SHARED within the clinic.
Loupes are not JUST for veterinarians either, technicians can be much more thorough in their cleaning with 💡 and 🔎
TIPS:
1️⃣ I recommend 2.0 - 2.5x magnification, this is generally enough. AND as you increase magnification your field of view gets smaller and the depth of your working length gets narrower.

2️⃣ Your working length is measured from the bridge of your nose to your hands when you are sitting up STRAIGHT with a straight neck and your elbows are bent at 90 degrees. This so to keep your posture correct while you work!
Who is currently using loupes?!? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Tooth brushing is THE most effective method of reducing plaque, calculus and periodontal disease.
And remember my 🔥 tips for 🪥 brushing:
1️⃣ HIGH quality REWARD = FOOD
Unlike us, cavities are incredibly rare in dogs (

OCCLUSION is the most important part of maxillofacial trauma!
These bones are the ONLY ones that have TEETH 🦷, and how this teeth occlude are very important.
1️⃣ for normal function we need to restore ‘normal’/pre-trauma occlusion.
2️⃣ despite what the fixation looks like, IF there is a malocclusion, abnormal tooth-on-tooth contact will generate force AGAINST the repair and lead to failure.
Transmylohyoid intubation removes the endotracheal tube from the patient’s oral cavity to allow for full closure on the mouth. Full closure allows maxillomandibular fixation to be placed to ensure occlusion is maintained throughout (and following) fracture fixation.
Have you seen either of these procedures before?
