We've got ADHD, we know exactly what to eat, and we still end up at the open fridge at dinner time feeling like we've failed again.

I'm really happy to be presenting at the Annual Online ADHD Awareness Expo with Tara McGillicuddy. My session is When Food Feels Impossible: ADHD Food Systems That Work When Willpower Doesn't, and the Expo opens October 17.

Most of us already know we should be eating protein, so knowing isn't what's missing, and what gets in the way is how much planning and starting it takes on a day when our focus and our patience ran out hours ago.

This statement hit me so hard.

It woke something up in me, and I just realized I’d blocked so much of this out.

I didn’t know what was going on after the birth of my first child, let alone my second.

What I knew was that I needed to ask for help, and I only knew that because of my own history.

I had apparently “done the work.” I’d seen the doctors. I’d taken the medications.

I already had a long history of anxiety and depression, so I knew to ask for help.

I still crashed. Hard. Like I’d never knew possible.

You can do all the things and still feel like you don’t know your own name day to day, especially on no sleep.

I remember pretending with my own mother that everything was fine. I pretended all the time, so it was easy.

Every. Single. Day.

I was drowning.

And nobody was ever looking for ADHD for me.

Very few of us actually talk about this. Not in the space that us moms need to hear it.

The conversations that make the people who love us shift in their seat, so they change the subject.

That silence has cost lives. Mothers and their children.

Enough.

If you are in it right now, please tell someone.

In Canada and the US you can call or text 988 any time.

Thank you ADDitude Magazine for “The Lindsay Clancy Case Should Alarm ADHD Moms.”

You’re standing in the middle of the store, staring at the shelves, and someone’s already trying to get past you with a cart.

You didn’t write it down, and now you’re on lap three. (I’m a nutritionist. It happens to me every time.)

Working memory doesn’t survive that store, so the list can’t live in your head. Ours is a speaker we yell at, and the kids can add to it too.

Save this before your next grocery run.

By the time someone asks what’s for dinner, your brain may already be cooked.

You’ve made a bazillion decisions, your glucose has dipped, everyone needs something, and suddenly dinner feels like proof that you’re failing.

It’s not.

It’s biology, executive function, and a system asking too much at the worst possible time.

I loved this conversation with Jessica Lewis of The ADHD Mom on Quick Wins for ADHD Moms.

Jessica’s work gives ADHD moms the kind of practical, honest support so many of us needed years ago.

Changing how we eat isn’t only about knowing what would help.

For ADHD brains, the hard part is often the transition: moving from what’s familiar to something new, switching routines, tolerating discomfort, and not tearing ourselves apart when it doesn’t happen perfectly.

That’s why I’m much more interested in experimentation than perfection.

What can we leave alone?
What can we ever-so-slightly adjust?
What can we replace without making the whole thing feel impossible?

This is the kind of real-life nutrition conversation I had with Mindi Anderson on Mindi Anderson

So many women hit midlife and think they’re falling apart.

But what if the systems that helped you compensate for years are no longer holding the same way?

In this conversation with Mindi Anderson on hotmessymidlife, we talk about late-diagnosed ADHD, perimenopause, burnout, food, executive function, and why “try harder” was never the answer.
