A Case of Kidney Stones
Patient: Male, 46yrs old.
Patient was complaining of back pain, yet claimed that because he was on vacation it could be because of the mattress he was sleeping on in the hotel. I told him to take some Arnica 200 and see if that helps to alleviate the pain. After a day of taking the Arnica, the patient says he didn't feel any better. We continued to discuss what he was experiencing and he mentioned that before going on vacation he was noticing that he was having pain during urination and decided to drink some cranberry juice. He said that it seemed to clear it up so he never mentioned it and didn't think it was related. He was eating and drinking different foods because of being on vacation and this may have been the trigger to bring back the symptoms. He said that he noticed his urine was cloudy and odorous and he was now worried that he maybe having the symptoms of kidney stones. With this new information and a limited supply of remedies, I suggested he try Lyc 200ch. He used it for the day but said he didn't get much relief from it. Since he was on vacation for another 2 days, I recommended that he use over the counter pain killers to make sure he was able to get back to Toronto safely and comfortably on the plane. We discussed that his dietary intake needed to change immediately. The patient ceased eating dairy and phosphoric/alcoholic drinks. It's important to remove all calcium and phosphorus as these two minerals are what bind together to make the stones, if that was what the patient was experiencing at this time.
Once back home in Toronto, the patient used the last pain killer the next morning and by the evening, all the symptoms were returning and were clear for me to see. He was having an intense back pain that was constant and local at the left side of his back just below his ribcage, the pain intensity was an 8. At times he would have sharp shooting pains, intensity of 10, and once he was standing and dropped to the ground from the pain while I stood by helplessly. From seeing this last episode, it was clear that he was having something serious, but since I am not in the business of diagnostics, I could only assume what he was experiencing. We sat down and discussed further...from what he was saying he was feeling, I prescribed Berberis 200ch, which is a kidney remedy. Upon first dose, he said he was not having the extremes of the pain at an intensity of 10, but instead was a steady 8. He went to bed that night without taking any other therapies. He says he struggled to find a comfortable position to sleep in.
The next morning, he was back at a constant 9, so we immediately redosed and started a round of tissue salts in water in order to break down the possible stones. 5 tablets of Calc Flor and 5 tablets of Calc Phos in a water bottle and he was to sip it throughout the day. I had him take 1/4 cup of cranberry juice (sugar free and organic) 4 times a day. He was also using Alcabase since he returned from his trip, twice daily, 1 tbs. This is a mineral supplement and it assists in keeping the pH levels of the body alkaline. We used pH paper to gauge where he was in the process. He started as an 8 and by the end of the day he was showing an improvement of 7, then 6 on subsequent days of the therapy. Then there was the Magnesium. This supplement he claimed made the biggest shift for him as he was noticing daily that the pain seemed to get reduced with each dosage. He was taking 150mg 3 times a day. What you need to know is that Magnesium will break down Calcium so that if there was a stone, it would be breaking it down and thus easier to pass. Lastly, I had him recite kidney resonating mantras and insisted that he recite them a number of times throughout the day. I know it seems hooky, but the mind is half the battle! All of the therapies were repeated over the course of the symptoms.
What makes this case so interesting is that the patient wasn't having any issues with his urine or with passing urine so it was hard to gauge if it was kidney stones. To be clear, this patient decided he didn't want to go to the hospital to get a proper diagnosis, and instead he chose to listen to what his body was telling him. His body, his choice. All in all, the process started at a constant 8, with peaks of 10, and within 4 days, he was down to a constant 3 for pain and 2 days later, he was at a 1-2 for pain intensity and back at his job and hanging with friends. What is amazing, is that he trusted his body and used all natural products and meditation to heal himself.
