Many of us don’t know how to recognize or respond to someone who is experiencing mental health challenges. People are experiencing an overwhelming amount of uncertainty and stress caused by current events. Now, more than ever, it is vital to understand the signs and symptoms of someone who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and knowing how to help.
Mental Health First Aid training prepares participants to interact confidently about mental health with their family, friends, communities, and workplaces.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Offered in partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is provided until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved. This 8-hour virtual course could potentially save lives!
Course Objectives:
Course participants will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and encourage that person to:
- Talk about declines in their mental well-being
- Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
- Reach out to these supports
- Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
- Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being
