I met Leonard many years ago, and last night I had the pleasure of another beautiful meeting with him, thistime through The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience, playing in Toronto until Sunday. I highly recommend seeing it if you can.
I almost didn’t go because I thought it would basically be people singing Leonard Cohen songs. I was completely wrong.
I know almost every song and most of the words, and somehow this made me hear Leonard Cohen all over again. The music, the movement, the humour, his Jewish identity — but especially the extraordinary power of his words.
At one point they read his final letter to Marianne, written just before she died, and then went into So Long, Marianne. I had tears in my eyes. I don’t remember the last time a piece of theatre did that to me.
I felt Leonard’s familiar words come to life in the most moving ways.
