We are incredibly honoured and grateful to see Dr. Houyuan Luo recognized for his contributions to Asian Psychology and mental health in Canada.

At MindPeace Psychology, we believe deeply in the importance of culturally responsive care, community connection, and creating safe spaces where individuals and families feel seen, understood, and supported. This acknowledgement is a meaningful reminder of the collective work being done to advance mental health awareness and advocacy within Asian communities.

We would like to sincerely thank the Asian Psychology Section of the CPA, Gesthika Kaltsidis, Dr. Gina Ko, and everyone involved in this recognition. We are grateful to stand alongside so many inspiring clinicians, educators, researchers, and community leaders who continue to uplift and strengthen our profession.

Dr. Luo remains committed to supporting clients with compassion, humility, and culturally informed care while continuing to contribute to mentorship, leadership, and community-building initiatives that advance equity and inclusion in mental health.

There is still important work ahead, and we look forward to continuing this journey together with our community and colleagues. Thank you again for this meaningful recognition and for continuing to advocate for Asian mental health in Canada.

After a highly publicized crash like the recent one at LaGuardia, flying can suddenly feel unsafe, even though actual risk hasn’t changed.

Our founder, Dr. Houyuan Luo, had the opportunity to speak with Global News.

Our brain reacts to vivid, emotional events, not statistics. Fear feels real. Risk hasn’t increased.

If you’re noticing anxiety:
Name it: “This is anxiety, not danger.”
Limit repeated news exposure
Avoid complete avoidance; gradual exposure helps

Feeling shaken is human. Staying stuck in fear doesn’t have to be.

The Polyvagal Theory has shaped how many people think about anxiety, trauma, and “shutdown” states. It suggests that when we feel safe, one part of the vagus nerve supports connection, and when stress is overwhelming, another part causes a kind of biological shutdown.

But a new scientific review by 39 international experts argues that the biological foundations of this theory are not supported by current evidence.

The authors question:
• Whether heart rate patterns truly measure how “regulated” or “safe” we are
• Whether the nervous system works in a simple ladder (safe → fight/flight → shutdown)
• Whether the evolutionary story behind the theory is accurate

Importantly, they are not denying that stress responses, anxiety, freeze reactions, or dissociation are real. They are questioning the specific biological explanation used to describe them.

The everyday takeaway?

Our nervous systems are real. Our stress responses are real. But human biology is more complex than neat labels like “ventral vagal” or “dorsal shutdown.”

Popular models can be helpful, but they should always be open to scientific review.

The year behind us may have asked a lot of your energy, your patience, your resilience.

At MindPeace Psychology, we believe meaningful change doesn’t come from rushing or fixing ourselves overnight, but from being truly heard and supported, one step at a time.

Valentine’s Day often brings pressure to find the “perfect” gift. At MindPeace Psychology, we encourage a different approach: prioritize meaningful connection over material presents.

Our founder, Dr. Houyuan Luo, recently shared insights in an article with about why shared experiences and quality time tend to have a deeper, longer-lasting impact than traditional gifts.

Research consistently shows that when couples intentionally spend time together, it strengthens emotional bonds and triggers hormones that reduce stress and increase feelings of safety and closeness. Even 30 minutes of undistracted, intentional time can significantly nurture a relationship.

Healthy, lasting relationships are built on consistent moments of connection, not grand gestures.

This Valentine’s Day, consider giving the gift of presence, attention, and shared experience.
