June is Seniors Month, and there’s no better time to talk about heart valve disease.

Heart valve disease has been called "the next cardiac epidemic." As Canada's population ages, more Canadians are at risk.

Besides age, risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and family history.

The good news? Although valve disease is serious, and can be life-threatening, it’s treatable.

If you’re 60+, ask your healthcare provider to listen to your heart with a stethoscope at your next appointment. 🩺

Stephanie had her first open-heart surgery for valve disease at 19.

Nine years later, she needed treatment again. This time she underwent TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation), a minimally invasive procedure that replaced her damaged valve.

After TAVI, her recovery was fast. Within weeks, she was back to hot yoga. At three months, boxing. At six months, she was working, energetic, and completing her nursing diploma.

"I want people to know you can have a very normal life living with valve disease."

💡 Valve disease is serious, potentially life-threatening—but treatable. Although it mostly affects people over 65, it can happen at any age.

New guidelines are changing how heart valve disease is treated—and the shift could help you or someone you love.

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) updated its guidelines for managing heart valve disease. The key changes: Intervening earlier, with less invasive treatment options.

💡 What this means for patients:
• Treatment may be recommended sooner
• Minimally invasive procedures like TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) are now recommended earlier for some patients
• The approach is more proactive and patient-centred

Valve disease is serious, and potentially life-threatening, but treatable. These updated guidelines reflect a growing body of evidence that earlier treatment leads to better patient outcomes.

This Mother's Day, give yourself the gift of heart health. If you're 60+, ask for a stethoscope check at your next appointment. 🩺

Heart valve disease is treatable but it’s underdiagnosed and undertreated in women.

Common symptoms—shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain—are too often dismissed as normal aging. Valve disease can sometimes be asymptomatic.

On , we're thanking the physicians who listen to their patients' hearts with a stethoscope—the first step in early detection of heart valve disease.

Every heart valve disease diagnosis starts with someone who listened.

If you’re 60+ ask your health care provider for a stethoscope check. 🩺
