Episode 13 - Mood

Sick with flu, I practiced Raag Sarang on my teacher’s instruction. Then in 1988 I met composer Umar Khayyam and he asked me to define Raag in one word. I said: mood. His next question changed how I understood music, tradition, and the nature of knowing.

Episode 12 - The Mirrors
My Gurmat Kirtan teacher Mahant Ajit Singh sent me back and forth all day carrying mirrors — seven trips, no explanation. Then he lit one candle among them and the dark room blazed. The lesson about Sangat, knowledge, and wisdom that changed everything.

Episode 11 - The Corner

My new teacher pointed me to a corner of his room and said: I will call you one day. Nine months later he did — and placed a Taanpura in my hands I had never touched before. I tuned it perfectly. The corner was the curriculum.

Paro

My blind Naad Yoga teacher Pandit Kharayti Lal Taheem took me to Paro, Bhutan at fifteen — and left me there alone for fifty two days with a shawl, mung beans, and fireflies in a jar. What I found in that silence changed everything.

What Did You Learn From Him?

I went to my Gurmat Kirtan teacher Mahant Ajit Singh before Gurpurab to ask permission to sing. Instead he asked: what have you actually learned from Guru Nanak? His answer changed what it means to call anyone your Guru.

The Glider

At thirteen I built a glider from bamboo and sent my friend off a sand hill. He broke his arm and leg. My grandmother’s response was not fury — it was Raag Gaurree. Deep stillness. Grounded truth. The lesson that changed how I approach everything I build.
