Fall colour from a cliff edge, 45 minutes from Toronto. Rattlesnake Point in Milton is peaking now.

This is the Niagara Escarpment at its most dramatic: sheer limestone cliffs, a view straight out over the valley, and turkey vultures riding the wind below you.

The walk is easy. From the main lot, the trail hits Pinnacle Lookout first, then follows the cliff edge to Buffalo Crag Lookout. About 3.4km total, under an hour.

Look at the cedars growing out of the rock face. Some are over 800 years old.

And no, there are no rattlesnakes. It’s named for how the escarpment looks from above.

Address: 7200 Appleby Line, Milton. Open 8:30am to 7pm daily.

Admission is $10.50 + HST per adult if you book online at parkvisit.ca, $12 + HST at the gate. Kids 5 to 14 are $7.25 online, under 5 free. Reservations aren’t required but the lot fills on fall weekends, so book ahead or go on a weekday morning.

Send this to whoever’s driving this weekend 🍁

Skip the three-hour drive to cottage country. All seven of these are inside 40 minutes of Mississauga.

Comment FALL and I’ll send you the full list with the addresses, the parking costs
and the closing dates, so you’re not screenshotting slides at a red light.

No overnight, no cottage booked in March to see leaves in October. Seven places you
can do on a Saturday morning and be home for lunch.

Closest first: Riverwood Park in Mississauga, Sixteen Mile Creek in Oakville at 20
minutes, Kelso in Milton at 30, Rattlesnake Point at 32, Cheltenham Badlands at 35,
then Belfountain and Forks of the Credit at 38.

Three have deadlines. Kelso’s chairlift stops November 1. Cheltenham Badlands closes
for the year November 17. Belfountain is reservation only and walk-ins get turned away.

Comment FALL and it’s yours.

Colour is at peak right now and it won’t hold long. Kelso Conservation Area, Milton.

5234 Kelso Road. About 40 minutes from Toronto, 30 from Mississauga, 25 from
Brampton.

You’re on the Niagara Escarpment here, so the views are down over Kelso Lake and
across the valley rather than along a trail. That’s what makes it different from
most fall colour spots near Toronto.

Three loops at the top if you want to walk: 0.4km easy, 3.1km moderate, 8.4km hard.
The easy one takes about ten minutes and gets you the view.

Admission and it’s worth checking conservationhalton.ca
before you drive out, because the lots fill on fall weekends and reservations can
be required.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Same colour, none of the crowd.

Save this one, there isn’t much of the season left.

Reserve before you drive. Walk-ins are turned away at this one, and the lot fills on fall weekends.

Belfountain Conservation Area, 819 Forks of the Credit Road, Caledon. About an hour
from Toronto, 30 minutes from Brampton.

WHAT IT COSTS (all in, HST included)
Adult 15 to 64: $8.50
Youth 6 to 14: $3.75
Kids 5 and under: free
Seniors 65+: $6.75
Vehicle permit: $11.30

So two adults in one car is $28.30.

BOOKING
You need a reservation. Book online through Credit Valley Conservation, or call

Two things that catch people out. Walking or biking in does not get you free entry here
even though it does at other CVC parks. And a Canoo membership does not cover this one.

HOURS
8am to 7pm, seven days. No entry in the final hour, so be through the gate by 6pm.

It was sitting at near full capacity this week with the fall colour advisory up, so go on a
weekday morning if you can. The park shuts for the winter season.

Save this before you plan the drive.

If Mars had fall colours. 25 minutes from Brampton.

Nov 17 is the last day it’s open this year, and you need a ParkPass reservation before you drive out.

The Cheltenham Badlands, 1739 Olde Base Line Road in Caledon. Twenty-five minutes
from Brampton, under an hour from Toronto.

The red is iron in the Queenston shale underneath. There’s nothing else in southern
Ontario that looks like it.

You see it from the boardwalk. Walking on the rock is not allowed, and that’s the
entire reason the boardwalk is there, so don’t plan the shot standing on it.

Open dawn to dusk. Reservation only. Parking

If you’ve been hunting fall colours near Toronto and you’re tired of the same trail
photos, this is the one worth the drive. Save it, you’ve got six weekends.
