Application Deadline February 28, 2027: Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (ATPPP)

We will be entering a new class in the fall of 2027 The upcoming 2027/2029 ATPPP class will be offered using a hybrid model: in person and via Zoom.

Recent successful graduates of the program have included social workers, psychiatrists and residents, psychologists, psychological associates, and GP psychotherapists in private practice.

Please note, we are not currently accredited by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, nor do we intend to apply for accreditation for the foreseeable future.

The program is open to regulated mental health professionals residing in Canada who have demonstrated knowledge, skill, and aptitude for psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Clinicians fully registered with the CRPO and the Colleges of Medicine, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing and Occupational Therapy will be considered for admission.

All applicants must have had clinical experience to be considered for admission. In addition to the written application process applicants will be interviewed by two senior clinicians associated with the program.

The program involves a didactic component (one evening a week) as well as clinical supervision on a minimum of two cases of intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy. It is two years in length.

Fundamental Psychoanalytic Perspectives Program:

If you are interested in psychoanalysis and want to learn more, whether or not you are a psychotherapist, then this comprehensive introductory program has been designed for you. This unique program has been offered since 2004 by the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society in response to the growing interest in understanding complex issues within ourselves, our patients, and in contemporary society. We have found that understanding psychoanalytic concepts can often be applied to professional and personal situations as well.

Each weekly seminar is usually led by a psychoanalyst who will explore a variety of basic psychoanalytic concepts through readings, explanatory clinical examples, and guided discussions. This thirty-six-week course is offered Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm between September and June.

Although this is not a training program, it does provide an excellent introduction to the core psychoanalytic concepts for people who may be interested in further training. This program is designed for those who have completed a graduate or professional degree. Selected applicants will be interviewed by a committee member.

Fundamental Psychoanalytic Perspectives is an introductory study program designed for psychotherapists or those professionals who simply have an interest in psychotherapy.

The Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis offers an intensive and comprehensive program in theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis, with an emphasis upon learning how to work with the unconscious.
The TIP is the only psychoanalytic training program in Toronto that qualifies its graduates for membership in both the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS) and the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). The latter was founded by Freud and is the world’s primary accrediting and regulatory body for psychoanalysis.
Graduation from the TIP and membership in the CPS and the IPA provide portability: one’s credentials as a psychoanalyst are recognized by IPA Institutes and Societies world-wide, and one’s membership is easily transferred. In addition, membership provides access to a wide range of scientific and clinical seminars and conferences—locally (the monthly scientific meetings of the TPS, the Annual Day in Psychoanalysis, the Annual Day in Applied Psychoanalysis), nationally, and internationally.

The Social and Political Life of Dreams

This course examines the social and political life of dreams. We begin with Sigmund Freud’s (1900) insight that, at bottom, dreams are simply “a particular form of thinking made possible by the conditions of the state of sleep.” Our course takes this insight as a central pivot to explore how dreaming—and especially the dream’s “work”—might help us better grasp the dreamer’s sociogenic conditions. In our course dreams are understood as a crucial psychological event that is central to health and wellbeing and as a radical form of thinking that carries important transpersonal information, revealing the ways social, historical, and environmental forces concentrate on an individual’s experience of life.

This course examines the social and political life of dreams and explores how dreaming—and especially the dream’s “work”—might help us better grasp the dreamer’s sociogenic conditions.

• The contributions of Wilfred Bion are among the most cited in psychoanalytic literature. Using clinical example, this course will focus on the implications for Bion’s theory on technique. Wilfred Bion’s thinking was rooted in the theories of Freud and Klein. However, he developed his own theory of thinking and with that also made recommendations for analytic listening. Bion emphasized that the field of psychoanalysis was the emotional meeting of two people. Training Analyst and Supervisor of Child and Adolescents of the Mexican Psychoanalytic Association (APM) Jani Santamaria Linares writes, “For Bion thoughts are the non-sensuous manifestation of the experience of frustration that somehow emerges from the sensuous experience of pain, if we can bear it.”

Seminar One: A history of Bion’s life and an introduction to the evolution of his theory.
Seminar Two: Bion’s understanding of psychic processing including links, alpha function, PSD, and formulations on the container/contained
Seminar Three: Bion’s recommendations for analytic listening and the importance of Negative capability
Seminar Four: An introduction to Bion’s concept of ‘O’ with clinical examples.

Looking at Bion’s theory of thinking and how he conceptualized psychic growth, and introducing the major themes of his theory and approach and their implications in the clinic.

• This insightful and innovative book sheds light on the complexity of the concept of guilt, while exploring aspects of guilt that have previously been overlooked in psychoanalytic theory and discourse.

Offering original insights on the topic, Donald Carveth looks at Freud’s failure to distinguish persecutory guilt from reparative guilt, and the superego from the conscience. The significance of these distinctions for both psychosocial theory and clinical practice is explored throughout the volume. Carveth distinguishes varieties of punitive guilt, such as justified, unjustified, “borrowed” or induced, existential and collective. He expertly describes patterns of self-punishment and self-sabotage, while also addressing the widespread use of persecutory guilt and self-punishment as a defence against and evasion of reparative guilt, contrition, and reparation. Throughout the volume, Carveth critically reviews a range of recent contributions to psychoanalytic literature to support his theories. Participants should obtain a copy of the book.

• Many training programs focus on teaching numerous theories of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Unfortunately, most people find that this is insufficient for practising psychotherapy. In this course you will have a chance to discuss the practical approaches/techniques and the challenging hurdles when practising psychodynamic psychotherapy.

We will be using the work of Fred Busch PhD., from his book Creating a Psychoanalytic Mind: A psychoanalytic method and theory (Routledge Publishers, 2014). He developed it for psychoanalysis, but it fits psychodynamic psychotherapy very well.
