Part 10. CANDIDIASIS

From Carolyn Dean who has been writing about CANDIDIASIS since her early years in Toronto. Somewhere I have her brochure 1001 cases. Carolyn asked me to respond to negative media comments. I was struggling to recover from vaccine damage and Dr. Dean was one of the people who helped me regain my immune system. She was featured on my former website and if you do an internet search - you tube - you can see how far ahead of her time she was and how she was a thorn in the side of conventional medicine.

Dr. Dean writes: Recently, on my radio show, I was asked about prostatitis – inflammation of the prostate. He was surprised to discover that Yeast Overgrowth is a likely cause. In fact, Yeast Overgrowth is a factor in the inflammatory response in the entire body.

Here are 12 factors that you can control to reduce yeast overgrowth:

Carolyn Dean MD ND
1. Not Replacing “Good Bacteria” when Using Antibiotics
Yeast Overgrowth as a medical condition has been with us for decades, ever since we began using antibiotics. But as we killed off good and bad bacteria with these drugs, we neglected to replace the good bacteria.

In times past, fermentation was a way of preserving foods and when we ate these bacterial organisms used to create sauerkraut, yogurt, and kim chi, they kept our gut microbiome happy and balanced. That bacterial microbiome physically kept yeast in check.

Cultivation of yeast in our intestines is not the intent when we take antibiotics, but it is one result. When we are prescribed antibiotics to kill a marauding microorganism, we imagine the drugs as smart missiles specifically targeting the enemy. However, antibiotics do not necessarily target the bacteria in question. Instead, they often mow down significantly more good bacteria than bad. The collateral damage to the “good” bacteria in the intestines can be severe, leading to huge gaps in defending the intestines from a takeover by yeast.

The onset of intestinal Yeast Overgrowth is slow, insidious, and is often missed. Even when a woman develops vaginitis from antibiotics, it can be diagnosed as a bacterial infection and treated with more antibiotics.

We have known for decades that antibiotics upset the natural flora of the bowel. One study in 1985 showed that 86% of Syrian hamsters suffered a decrease in total bowel flora after being given antibiotics. After the antibiotic treatment, a group of hamsters that were given C. albicans by feeding tube developed Candida infection in the liver, spleen, and kidneys.[1]

In that same study, the authors said that those animals whose intestinal flora survived did so by forming a dense layer of beneficial bacteria in the mucus gel of the intestines, out-competing yeast cells for adhesion sites. They also found inhibitor substances (fatty acids and bile acids) that reduced C. albicans adhesion. This provided early evidence of the benefits of probiotics.

Therefore, it is very important to use pre- and probiotics to reestablish good bacteria in the gut. This is something we can all do when we choose to take antibiotics.

2. Alcohol Consumption
We have a big clue about the association of yeast and alcohol. For the most part, people with severe yeast overgrowth avoid alcohol because it makes them feel so much worse. In fact, alcohol may have been a contributor to the evolution of their symptoms. But at a certain point, the additive effect of drinking alcohol to the actual alcohol produced by yeast is too much to bear.

Yes, alcohol itself is one of the 78 toxic byproducts of yeast metabolism. Alcohol carries a double punch. It is a fermented yeast product and an alcohol sugar, both of which encourage yeast growth. Just as you can crave sugar and carbs urged on by ravenous yeast, you can also crave alcohol. In fact, yeast overgrowth could be one of the reasons that people become addicted to alcohol. Unfortunately, people who run Alcoholic Anonymous substitute yeast-promoting sugar treats for alcohol.

3. Stress and Steroid Hormones
Stress puts your body on steroids. Steroids, both natural and prescription, feed yeast. Our own body’s steroid hormones are there to help treat inflammation, but when on overload, they cause problems. Steroid hormones are produced during stress and stress in the body is equated with starvation so one function of steroids is to stimulate the breakdown of glycogen in the liver into glucose, and glucose is the perfect food for yeast and for weight gain. We have heard that stress produces excess cortisol, and that hormone promotes belly fat. But yeast and yeast toxins could also be involved.

4. Mercury Contamination
Mercury is second only to plutonium in its toxic effects. When you chew food with teeth that have mercury fillings, you create mercury v***r that you then swallow. This mercury v***r acts like a super antibiotic that kills gut bacteria.

We are also exposed to mercury as the preservative called thimerosal in vaccines. However, single dose vials may not contain mercury.

Many kinds of fish are contaminated with mercury and can cause elevated levels in our body.

We may be exposed to mercury if we live near a coal-burning plant or crematorium or work in a dental office.

We can moderate mercury contamination by making sure that if we eat fish, the source for the fish is mercury-free. Also, if there is mercury in the environment, we can use pre- and probiotics to support good bacteria and research, “nutrients that detoxify heavy metals,” such as magnesium and glutathione in order to reduce mercury in the body. Pre- and probiotic formulas containing Humic/Fulvic acids can help bind heavy metals, yeast toxins, and chemical toxins.

5. Birth Control Pills
The premenstrual surge in hormones that happens the week before your me**es provides an environment that encourages yeast to grow. However, when we take hormones in the form of birth control pills, for three out of four weeks in the month, we are creating that very same environment. One thing we can do to avoid this challenge is to research natural and healthy alternatives to the BCP.

6. Immunosuppressant Drugs
As the name of the drug implies, suppressing the immune system will take the focus away from keeping yeast and yeast toxins under control, allowing them to run rampant in the body. Using nutrients like Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, and Zinc can help build the immune system and can be alternatives.

One of the things I learned when I was working on an AIDS and Chronic Fatigue study in Manhattan in the early 90s was the 100% incidence of Yeast Overgrowth in AIDS patients. Their weakened immune systems just couldn’t keep yeast under control.

7. Pregnancy
Hormones reach very high levels during pregnancy and can encourage yeast overgrowth. Pregnancy is also a time of cravings, and when women give in to carbohydrate and sugar cravings, even fruit cravings, Yeast Overgrowth is an outcome. When a woman has Yeast Overgrowth and yeast vaginitis, she can pass yeast on to her child during vaginal delivery. I’ve seen children with yeast ear infections from birth that were badly misdiagnosed and mistreated with antibiotics.

8. Diets High in Sugar, Carbohydrates, and Yeast
All these foods are fodder for yeast. Toast and jam for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, lots of coffee with sugar, and pasta for dinner is “high carb heaven” for yeast. If concerned about yeast overgrowth, start eliminating these foods from your diet by replacing them with non-starchy vegetables and adding organic chicken and beef to avoid the antibiotics that are fed to chickens and cattle.

9. Trauma/Gut Surgery
When the gut is altered through surgery, the microbiome can be susceptible to Yeast Overgrowth from the stress and from the antibiotics that are usually given.

Environmental Factors that Cause Yeast Overgrowth
10. Depletion of the Soil Due to Corporate Agri-Farming and Chemical Fertilizers
When our grandparents still grew at least some of their own food, the soil was teeming with nutrients and good bacteria. Who remembers their parents going out into the garden, picking a few carrots, knocking off the clods of earth, and lightly washing those carrots? Didn’t those carrots have a bit of residual dirt on them? That is how our ancestors maintained a healthy balance of soil-based bacteria.

Unfortunately, with the advent of chemical fertilizers and corporate Agri farming, most farmers do not replenish a balance of nutrients and good bacteria in their soil. This means that supplementing pre- and probiotics may be necessary to maintain balanced yeast.

11. Chlorine in the Water
We can be exposed to chlorine in swimming pools, showers, baths, drinking water, and water used in restaurants or to cook processed foods that end up in boxes in your freezer. Chlorine kills microorganisms in water, and it does the same in your body, disrupting your intestinal flora leaving room for intestinal yeast to overgrow. Chlorine also binds magnesium and contributes to magnesium deficiency. We can minimize this challenge by using reverse osmosis and/or whole house water filters to remove the Chlorine.

12. Exposure to Mold and Mildew Due to Untreated Water Damage
Mildew, mold, and black mold in homes are increasing in epidemic proportions. Every time you hear about flooding or water damage – mold follows. You can remove the leak, wash off the mold with strong detergents or even bleach, while wearing a mask, and install an ozone machine to help kill the airborne mold. You can get a small $60.00 unit on Amazon that you turn on in a closed room for half an hour at a time. However, mold remediators might have to be called.

The above twelve causes of yeast overgrowth have an even greater impact in a body that is already compromised by the following factors:

High carbohydrate and sugar diet
Lack of HCL, bile, and pancreatic enzymes leading to incomplete digestion
Overburdened immune system
Intestinal dysbiosis (imbalance in the microbiome)
Toxic gastrointestinal tract
Leaky gut
The yeast protocol I recommend consists of picometer-sized, stabilized ions of liquid silver, an antifungal, Sacchromyces bourlardii, and Humic, Fulvic acids.

Part 9.
Posted by Carolyn Dean MD ND MAGNESIUM.
As part of my commitment to make magnesium a household name and have everyone in those households optimizing their magnesium levels, I’ve researched and written thousands of pages about this miraculous mineral over the last two decades. For my recent book, Magnesium the Missing Link to Total Health (Revised), I reviewed over 600 references to verify and validate the crucial role magnesium plays in 80% of the body’s metabolic functions.
What this means is simply being deficient in magnesium can result in the poor performance of 80% of the body – Period. Metabolic functions are the automatic processes that run the body, from breathing to breaking down food, cellular repair to circulation. And with about 80% of the population being magnesium deficient, most of humanity is operating their bodies without the proper fuel, and basically flying at half-mast 100% of the time.
Can you see why I’m so focused on getting the word out about magnesium?
In addition to being essential to these metabolic functions, I’ve repeatedly said that magnesium is likely essential for up to 1,000 biochemical reactions in the body. Most other researchers put forward 300-325 reactions and a handful say 600 biochemical reactions rely on magnesium to function properly.
Finally, a December 2023 Brazilian Review Paper in the peer reviewed journal, Nutrients, on the “critical importance” of optimizing magnesium levels in the aging population described magnesium as having “a central role in approximately 800 biochemical reactions within the human body.”¹ Imagine my delight at seeing this deeper validation of my own research.
At the heart of this article, the authors described the concept of “intrinsic capacity” in the aging population as introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to this model, healthy aging relies on a combination of five physical and mental factors: locomotion, sensory, vitality, cognitive, and psychological.
Based on their review of decades of literature, the authors have shown evidence that magnesium is essential to the intrinsic capacity of aging humans who are simultaneously suffering from a continual depletion of this vital mineral which cannot be substituted by any other substance (and certainly not by any drug).
The authors created a diagram, featuring magnesium in the center of the five areas of intrinsic capacity that they’ve used as a model to illustrate the importance of magnesium in the aging population.
To my eyes, it actually illustrates how vital magnesium is in all ages and populations. I’ve already indicated that 80 percent of the population has magnesium deficiency. And while I agree that optimizing magnesium levels in elderly patients will contribute to their intrinsic capacity, their physical and mental wellbeing, do not wait for your senior years to treat your magnesium deficiency with a supplement of picometer, stabilized ions of magnesium!
In my book, Magnesium the Missing Link to Total Health (Revised), I detail how magnesium deficiency may be at the root of 68 health conditions which I broke down into areas musculoskeletal, neurological, Ob/Gyn, pediatric, and general health.
I’ve ripped apart their lovely diagram to give you the goods on current magnesium research. Please go to the reference below so you can see the magnesium map for yourself in the Nutrients article!

Death - or is it?

Posting in memory of several close friends who 'left' us recently.

"We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment, but it is transient. It is a little parenthesis in eternity. If we share with caring, lightheartedness, and love, we will create abundance and joy for each other. And then this moment will have been worthwhile." Deepak Chopra

"We are travelers on a cosmic journey - stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal, but the expressions of life are ephemeral, momentary, transient. This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds. To watch the birth and death of human beings is like looking at the movements of a dance. A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky, rushing like a torrent down a steep mountain." Buddha

This is from my (Maie Liiv) Therapeutic Touch days - TT is a form of energy healing.

"Birth, life and death happen to every living thing in the universe, from the life of the farthest star to the life of the smallest microbe. It is a law of nature, and nothing will stop this universal cycle. It is important for those in the health professions to acknowledge that. If a person can accept this view of life, it enables him or her to help a great many people with a sense of equanimity"

Part 7. GLUTEN
Gluten: cereal grains, bread, pasta, Celiac Disease

What is gluten? Gluten is a sticky elastic protein found in the seed of grains like wheat, rye, barley, kamut, spelt, etc. Gluten results when gliadin and glutenin join with starch in the seed. If you are eating bread, bagels, muffins, cereal, pizza and pasta, you are most likely consuming gluten.

People who are extremely sensitive to gluten have an autoimmune response to it the digestive tract and are considered to have celiac disease. There are also various degrees of non-celiac gluten intolerance. Here's where things like bloating, post-nasal drip, sinusitis, eczema, psoriasis, depression and mood disorders, arthritis, osteoporosis, and much more, fit in.

Cardiologist William Davis writes in his Wheat Belly blog:

Wheat Belly looks at how eliminating wheat - even the so-called healthy whole grain wheat - from our diets is the key to permanent weight loss and relief from a broad spectrum of health and digestive problems. You will be surprised and shocked. Not only celiac disease, but also heart disease, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, bone density, psoriasis, hair loss, inflammation, arthritis, neurological disorders, dementia, depression and other mood disorders......etc, etc.

Modern-day wheat has been genetically altered to provide processed-food manufacturers the greatest yield at the lowest cost. Wheat has become a nutritionally bankrupt ubiquitous ingredient and a major immune system disruptor. Our bodies and our brains no longer recognize it as food.

William Davis writes: "Fourteen-chromosome wild grass has been transformed into the forty-two-chromosome, nitrate-fertilized, top-heavy, ultra-high-yield variety...." He describes his struggle "to come to terms with what has to be one of the biggest nutritional blunders conducted on an international scale."

In The Paleo Diet Loren Cordain PhD explains the genetics and the evolutionary history that determines what the ideal diet should be.
www.thepaleodiet.com

Unfortunately most doctors don't think like this, but this New York Times article: Think Like a Doctor: The Right Test Solved! by Lisa Sanders MD shows how celiac disease was responsible for one patient's symptoms of depression, fatigue, diffuse muscle aches and soreness, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, burning sensation of skin to touch, etc. The Right Test Solved!

Psychiatrist James Greenblatt wrote in Psychology Today about a 24-year-old patient diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety and depression. He had been prescribed a different medication for each diagnosis. Dr. Greenblatt made a definitive diagnosis and started the young man on a gluten-free diet. He is no longer on any psychiatric medications and no longer has three psychiatric diagnoses. "Is Gluten making You Depressed?"

A Nutrition&Metabolism; article reports the unexpected resolution of longstanding schizophrenic symptoms when gluten was eliminated from the diet. A woman, now 70, had a diagnosis of schizophrenia since age 17. She'd had hallucinations on almost a daily basis since age seven and had made multiple su***de attempts. Her other medical problems included obesity, hypertension, depression, obstructive sleep apnea, gastroesophagal reflux disease, urinary incontinence, glaucoma, bursitis, peripheral neuropathy. Read what happened when the woman was put on a gluten-free, low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet. A case report and review of the literature.

Suzy Cohen RPh is the author of 'Drug Muggers' (see Supplementing Your Prescription section of this website to learn how your meds may be robbing your body of key nutrients.) On her website she posted an item about gluten allergies being more common than you think. She writes that for every one person with the digestive problems typically associated with gluten intolerance, there are eight with no GI symptoms. Here's why she thinks everyone should be tested.

In a 2/2012 Facebook post Suzy Cohen wrote: "Cereal can make you CRAZY! Wheat is a grain which contains 'exorphins' which act similarly to morphine (opioids). The psychoactive nature of these exorphins occurs b/c the grain is not completely digested, and in some people (esp those with 'leaky gut'), it travels thru the blood and into your brain. This explains why some people have psychiatric problems (panic attacks, bipolar, depression, brain fog, etc.) despite medication use. You have to remove the antigen (wheat in this case). If you have psychiatric or neurological complaints, I would avoid gluten-containing foods, and preferably all grains. What have you got to lose? Your mind!"

Suzy Cohen blogs: " One of the most terrifying symptoms of wheat intolerance (gluten) is that it can actually damage the brain and mimic Alzheimer's brain deterioration. Interestingly this can happen without any gut symptoms. Gluten is being suspected as playing a role in some of our neurological disorders. You may not like hearing it, but it does not change the fact that gluten is creating havoc with many people. This is only going to get bigger. The worst part is that many of the symptoms you may experience never will point to the real gut issue you may have."

Part 6

Consciousness and Intuition

The Consciousness section of this website is in memory of Leili (Marks) Kasari MD (1911-2004) and Voldemar Kasari MD (1913- 2005). They were surgeons in Estonia during the Second World War and became MD homeopaths before they came to Canada in the early 1950's. We knew them as Leenu and Volli. They lived a simple life. Their patients lived long healthy lives. They loved animals. She wore a gold ankh pendant. They wrote no or very few pharmaceutical prescriptions. They gave their patients a few pellets of a homeopathic remedy folded in a piece of paper and labelled in pencil #1, 2 , 3, etc. They charged little and often not at all. They both worked until God called them home. They were my first teachers.

Leenu told me to read In Tune With the Infinite by Ralph Waldo Trine (1866-1958) and Cosmic Consciousness by Richard Maurice Bucke (1837-1902). Of course I didn't. And then in my fifties I had a spiritual 'emergency.' And I had to read those books and many more.

Clairvoyant Viktor Tonissoo (1931- 2010) bellowed when he first saw me: 'What the hell happened to you! You were a totally healthy person and doctors have turned you into a piece of s**t. They should all be jailed. There are nine holes in your energy field caused by pharmaceuticals!' And then he told me I was in the mess I was in because consciousness is not taught in schools. He told me to tell my story so others could learn.

And so I am (still) writing my book: Shattered Rainbow - a story of psychic attack, spiritual emergency and medical malfeasance. It is dedicated to those who lost their health or their lives to the ignorance known as conventional allopathic psychiatry. It's also dedicated to those of my acquaintances so entrenched in their belief systems that they consider themselves 'too scientifically trained to believe' anything I say.

Christine Harrington received messages from Source (aka God, Great Spirit, etc.) and shared them through healing sessions and her website www.thetimeoflove.com. One day while she was visiting, her gaze fell on In Tune With The Infinite. 'There is God in here' said Christine as she held the book. 'The new consciousness IS our full connection to God. To be truly conscious, you have to be connected to Source and aware of this relationship in a true way.'

Here are some excerpts from In Tune With the Infinite. Please note that this book was published in 1897 - at the dawn of the twentieth century.

The Supreme Fact of the Universe

"The great central fact of the universe is that the Spirit of Infinite Life and Power that is back of all, that animates all, that manifests itself in and through all: that self-existent principle of life from which all has come, and not only from which all has come, but from which all is continually coming. If there is an individual life, there must of necessity be an infinite source of life from which it comes. If there is a quality or a force of love, there must of necessity be an infinite source of love whence it comes. If there is wisdom, there must be the all-wise source back of it from which it springs. The same is true in regard to peace, the same in regard to power, the same in regard to what we call material things."

"Every act of our everyday lives is governed by these same great laws and forces. Every flower that blooms by the wayside, springs up, grows, blooms, fades, according to certain great immutable laws. Every snowflake that plays between earth and heaven, forms, falls, melts, according to certain great unchangeable laws."

" We are recognizing our true identity, that we are bringing our lives into harmony with the same great laws and forces, and so opening ourselves to the same great inspirations as have all the prophets, seers, sages and saviors in the world's history, all men of truly great and mighty power. For in the degree that we come into this realization and connect ourselves with this Infinite Source, do we make it possible for the higher powers to play, to work, to manifest through us."

Intuition

"Intuition is to the spiritual nature and understanding practically what sense perception is to the sensuous nature and understanding. It is an inner spiritual sense through which man is opened to the direct revelation and knowledge of God, the secrets of nature and life, and through which he is brought into conscious unity and fellowship with God"

"It is, we repeat, a spiritual sense opening inwardly, as the physical senses open outwardly; and because it has the capacity to perceive, grasp, and know truth at first hand, independent of all external sources of information, we call it intuition."

"In the degree that we come into the recognition of our own true selves, into the realization of the oneness of our lives with the Infinite Life, and in the degree that we open ourselves to this divine inflow, does this voice of intuition, this voice of the soul, this voice of God, speak clearly; and in the degree that we recognize, listen to and obey it, does it speak ever more clearly, until by and by there comes the the time when it is unerring, absolutely unerring, in its guidance."

Sensitivity

There are those among us who are more sensitively organized than others. As an organism their bodies are more finely, more sensitively constructed. These, generally speaking, are people who are always more or less affected by the mentalities of those with whom they come in contact, or in whose company they are. Some think it unfortunate for one to be sensitively organized. By no means, it is a good thing, for one may thus be more open and receptive to the higher impulses of the soul within, and to all higher forces and influences from without. It may, however, be unfortunate and extremely inconvenient to be so organized unless one recognize and gain the power of closing himself, of making himself positive to all detrimental or undesirable influences. This power everyone, however sensitively organized he may be, can acquire. I close myself, I make myself positive to all things below, and open and receptive to all higher influences, to all things above. It soon becomes a habit.

Medicine

"A physician goes to see a patient. He gives no medicine this morning. Yet the very fact of his going makes the patient better. He has carried with him the spirit of health; he has carried brightness of tone and disposition; he has carried hope into the sick chamber; he has left it there. In fact the very hope and cheer he has carried with him has taken hold of and has had a subtle but powerful influence upon the mind of the patient; and this mental condition imparted by the physician has in turn its effects upon the patient's body, and so through the instrumentality of this mental suggestion the healing goes on."

"The method that has as its work the application of drugs, medicines and external agencies is the artificial method. The only thing that any drug or any medication can do is to remove obstruction, that the life forces may have simply a better chance to do their work. The real healing process must be performed by the operation of the life forces within."

"For generations past the the most important influence that plays upon nutrition, the life principle itself, has remained an unconsidered element in the medical profession, and the almost exclusive drift of its studies and remedial paraphernalia has been confined to the action of matter over mind. This has seriously interfered with the evolutionary tendencies of the doctors themselves, and consequently the psychic factor in professional life is still in a rudimentary or comparatively undeveloped state."

The Nature of Thought and the Power of the Word

"Thought is a vital, living force, the most vital, subtle and irresistible force there is in the universe. Thoughts are forces, they have form and quality, substance and power. We are beginning also to find that through the instrumentality of our thought forces we have creative power. Everything in the material universe about us, everything the universe has ever known, had its origin first in thought. From this it took its form. Everything exists in the unseen before it is manifested or realized in the seen. The unseen things are the cause, the seen things are effect. The power of the word is a literal scientific fact. Through the operation of our thought forces, we have creative power."

"We are all living in a vast ocean of thought and the very atmosphere around us is continually filled with the thought forces that are continually going out in the the form of thought waves. We are all affected, more or less, by these thought forces, either consciously or unconsciously; and in the degree that we are more or less sensitively organized, or in the degree that we are negative and so are open to outside influences, rather than positive, thus determining what influences shall enter into our realm of thought, and hence into our lives."
