As pediatricians, we want parents to know: it’s okay to ask.

Ask about their mood.
Ask about school, friendships, stress and anxiety.
Ask when they seem different.
And yes, if you’re concerned, ask directly about su***de.

Talking about su***de does not put the idea into a child’s head. In fact, creating a safe, open conversation can help a young person feel heard and connected.

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to listen, without judgment, and help your child find the support they need.

Sometimes, asking the question can be the first step toward getting help.

At KIDCREW, we’re here to support the whole child — including their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Starting school comes with enough to remember—backpacks, lunch boxes, indoor shoes, permission forms… and somehow keeping track of a vaccination schedule too. 😅

But this is one thing worth putting at the top of the list. ❤️

Keeping your child’s routine vaccinations up to date is an important part of protecting them—and the children and families around them.

Vaccines help protect children from serious, preventable illnesses and are especially important as kids enter environments where they’re spending lots of time together.

Before the school year gets into full swing, take a moment to:

💉 Check your child’s vaccination record
📅 Make sure they’re up to date with the recommended schedule
📞 Contact your healthcare provider if you’re unsure what’s due
📝 Keep their records somewhere easy to find

And if you’re not sure whether your child has missed something, don’t panic. Your healthcare provider can help you figure out what they need and when.

Because preparing your little one for their first year of school isn’t just about buying the right backpack.

It’s about giving them the healthiest start possible. 🎒❤️

Ah yes… the dreaded message from school:

“There has been a case of ______ in your child’s class.” 😳

And suddenly every parent is wondering if they should disinfect the entire house.

MYTH: If one child in the class gets sick, everyone is definitely going to get sick.

THE TRUTH: Germs can spread easily among young children, especially in classrooms where little hands, shared toys, close conversations and enthusiastic hugs are all part of the day.

But one sick child does NOT mean every child will become sick.

There are lots of factors that affect whether an illness spreads—and good everyday habits can help reduce the risk.

🧼 Regular handwashing
🤧 Covering coughs and sneezes
🏠 Keeping kids home when they’re sick
🧴 Cleaning commonly touched surfaces
💉 Staying up to date with recommended vaccines

And perhaps the most important reminder for new-school parents:

You cannot control every germ your child encounters.

Your child is going to share a classroom, share a playground and—let’s be honest—probably share a few germs too. 😅

That’s not a parenting failure.

It’s part of being part of a community.

So when you hear that someone in the class is sick, take a breath. ❤️

You don’t need to panic. You just need to keep practicing healthy habits.

Starting school often comes with a little bonus you didn’t exactly put on the supply list… 🤧

MYTH: “The more colds my child gets, the stronger their immune system will become.”

THE TRUTH: Your child’s immune system is learning from everyday exposure to viruses and other germs—but that doesn’t mean you need to purposely expose them to illness.

In those first school years, it’s completely normal for kids to pick up more coughs, colds and sniffles as they encounter new germs and spend more time around other children.

So if your new JK or SK student seems to have a runny nose every other week…

Take a breath. ❤️

It doesn’t necessarily mean they have a “bad” immune system. It may simply mean they’re experiencing a very normal part of childhood.

The good news? With time, their immune system gets more familiar with many of the germs they encounter.

New school. New friends. New germs. New immune-system lessons.

One sniffle at a time. 😉

If you’re sending your little one to school for the first time, it’s tempting to want to protect them from EVERY. SINGLE. GERM. 🦠

MYTH: “The cleaner and more germ-free my child’s environment, the healthier they’ll be.”

THE TRUTH: We can’t—and don’t need to—eliminate every germ from childhood.

Kids learn, play, share toys, touch playground equipment, hold hands, sit beside friends and occasionally put something questionable in their mouths. 😅

That’s childhood.

The goal isn’t to create a completely germ-free bubble.

It’s to teach healthy habits:

🧼 Wash hands regularly
🤧 Cough or sneeze into an elbow
🏠 Stay home when truly sick
🥤 Don’t share drinks or utensils
💤 Get plenty of sleep
🥦 Eat a variety of nutritious foods

And perhaps most importantly…

Don’t panic every time your child comes home with a sniffle.

Starting school is a HUGE transition for little ones—and getting an occasional cold is a very normal part of being around a whole new community of children.

You’re not failing to protect them.
You’re helping them learn how to navigate the world. ❤️
