What is the BPS model?
The biopsychosocial pain model is the idea that pain is multifactorial and involves more than just a physical stimuli to produce pain. Factors are broken down into 3 categories - biological, psychological, and social. Some examples of each are below:
* Bio (physiological pathology)
* Psycho (thoughts emotions and behaviours such as psychological distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods and attribution)
* Social (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors such as work issues, family circumstances and benefits/economics)
So how is this relevant to massage? Well I believe that this highlights the importance of creating a sense of safety with my clients and also getting to understand the bigger picture of how other aspects of their life may be affecting their physical well-being. I also take this model into consideration when I give homecare for people.
