We don’t homestead because it’s easy.
We do it because easy doesn’t sit right in our bones.
Out here in rural Alberta, the wind doesn’t ask permission and neither do we.
We wake up before the sun like it owes us money.
We go to bed sore, dirty, and smelling like feed, diesel, and whatever chaos the day threw at us.
We trade weekends for chores, vacations for calving season, and “days off” for “maybe if nothing dies.”
We’ve bottle-fed the weak ones at 2am.
We’ve buried the ones that didn’t make it.
We’ve stretched a dollar so thin it could slip through a barbed wire fence.
And still… we keep going.
Because we’ve seen behind the curtain.
We know what store shelves look like when things go sideways.
We know what “supply chain issues” really mean when your animals still need to eat.
We know that nobody is coming to save you when the lights flicker and the trucks stop rolling.
So we plant anyway.
We raise it anyway.
We build, fix, weld, patch, and figure it out anyway.
Call it stubborn. Call it crazy. Call it “a lot of work for a dozen eggs.”
But those eggs?
They didn’t come from a system that forgets your name.
They came from your hands. Your land. Your long, exhausting, relentless days.
And yeah, we laugh about it too.
Like when the chicken you raised from a puffball turns into a feathered outlaw.
Or when you fix something perfectly… just in time for something else to break.
Or when you finally sit down and realize you forgot to eat all day.
And then there’s the kids.
The ones growing up with dirt under their nails instead of screens in their faces.
The ones who know where food comes from, what loss looks like, and how to stand back up anyway.
They’re learning grit before comfort. Responsibility before excuses.
They’re watching us choose this life… and one day they’ll understand exactly why.
This life takes more than most people are willing to give.
Time. Comfort. Sleep. Sanity… occasionally.
But what we get in return?
Independence.
Resilience.
A kind of freedom that doesn’t come with instructions or permission.
We don’t do this because the system works.
We do it because we know it doesn’t.
And if you’re still here, still grinding, still choosing this life even when it’s hard…
You’re exactly the kind of person this world is going to need.
