Well… last night didn’t go quite as planned.
I taught a class that completely flopped.
I ran through my sequence way too quickly, forgot parts, couldn’t think of what to do next, and somehow my brain just… stopped working.
As all of this was unfolding, I could feel myself getting more and more caught up in my head.
By the end, my inner critic had arrived, and she was loud!
I could see the frustration and disappointment on some of my students’ faces, and instead of being able to just let it go, I took it all in. Every look, every awkward moment, every mistake became more fuel for that inner voice telling me I wasn’t good enough.
I left that class feeling pretty defeated.
Then I had to get in my car, drive to another location, and teach my final class of the night, all while crying as I talked to my mom on the drive.
Honestly, I wanted to curl up in a ball and forget the whole thing ever happened, but that was not an option.
I walked into that next class and taught the same sequence.
This time I held myself with kindness, compassion and with a little more grace.
The irony wasn’t lost on me…
Earlier that evening, I had been talking to my students about meeting ourselves with kindness and compassion when we face challenges.
Much easier to teach those words than to actually live them.
Maybe the universe needed me to live my own lesson that night and it reminded me of something I am learning over and over again:
One mistake does not define you.
A bad class doesn’t make me a bad teacher.
A difficult moment doesn’t make me a failure.
And someone else’s reaction doesn’t get to determine my worth.
Sometimes these uncomfortable moments shine a light on the places within us that are still asking for love and attention. They uncover old patterns, insecurities, or pieces of ourselves that are ready to be seen differently.
We stumble and mess up. We have really crappy days and then we get back up.
We breathe, soften, learn and try again.
Life isn’t always easy. But I’m learning that the darker moments can also be where we discover just how much light we carry within us.
I needed that reminder. Today I choose to meet myself with a more kindness 🩷
