This has got to be one of the hardest conversations a family can face and one of the most important.
Children are perceptive, and they notice when something is wrong, even when adults try to shield them. Without an honest, age-appropriate explanation, they often fill in the gaps with fear, confusion, or self-blame.
Want to talk to your kids about it? Here’s where you can start:
1. Use simple, honest language. Give them just enough truth for their age.
2. Reassure them that it’s not their fault, as kids internalize more than we realize.
3. Keep routines as stable as possible. Predictability is safety for children.
4. Be open to questions and let it be okay to not have every answer.
5. Remind them how much you love them.
These won’t be perfect conversations, but just having one is one of the most protective things you can do for your kids.
