(short version) → Next ✨messy writers club✨ meeting is in 2 weeks on Tuesday, July 7th (link in comments). We’re taking an extra week to adjust to the summer energy, heat, and transition. Here’s a prompt for this week to play with.
---
(long version) → This week's prompts are also influenced by the solstice and the shifts this season carries. The longer warmer days can feel like an invitation for more discovery, play, and connection.

One of my go-to writing tools is using a word bank. Mine takes shape as a small bag that holds around 15-20 slips of paper, each one has a word written on it. So when I’m in need of some new inspiration for writing, I pick out a random word and play with it, find connections and discover new possibilities.

💡There are many different ways to create a word bank. I sought out words that evoked a sense of wonder and curiosity. Other possibilities include cutting out words or images from magazines, creating a document on your computer as a list, opening up an old book and circle your favourite words or it seems like there are apps out there as well. If you are inspired to make more of a process out of it, you could go for a walk and pick up your words from your surroundings.

✍️When you're ready to start writing, try setting a timer and writing out everything that starts coming up for a random word. It might take a little while for things to start flowing, once they do you can play with picking out some new words to see where it takes you.
---
Does anyone else use some type of word bank? What does it look like?

Summer Solstice is a few days away here on the west coast, and we're already feeling the warmth of longer days and brighter evenings. The winters can feel long over here in Canada, whether it’s months of rain and grey skies or relentless snow falls and wind.

The warm longer days can feel like a nice long sigh, an invitation to open up and expand. There’s a new found ease to moving again without all the layers needed to keep us warm and dry through the winter. We have more energy and space to reconnect with family, friends and maybe even a sense of adventure.

It feels like time for discovery, play, and connection.

This is the inspiration for this week’s messy writers club prompts.

We meet again tomorrow - Tues, June 16th and start at 7pm(PT) on Zoom. It's not too late to sign up! It's always drop-in and by donation, so you can join any session. I'll post the link to sign-up in the comments.

I'm curious: what are you inviting in this summer?

(long version) → This weeks prompts were brought to you by my own process of getting stuck in some of my own heaviness and not feeling my usual ease and flow to do my morning writing ritual.

I’m all about switching up routines or rituals and taking time to feel into deep emotions. I can also be known to get a bit lost in these states and eventually start to feel destabilized or overwhelmed which then eventually turns into freezing and shutting down. It’s definitely a familiar cycle. I know in my brain that doing some writing will be really helpful, but in my body the act of just picking up a pencil feels very heavy. The idea of knowing where to start becomes daunting. This combined with a fear of what needs to come out or be heard only increases the weight of the heaviness.

What I also know is that always, no matter what, sitting down and writing through whatever it is results in some kind of shift. There is some uncomfy writing in the beginning that ultimately needs to come out and it doesn’t always make sense (messy writing!!). Eventually, things start to flow and feel lighter. Sometimes I even find my own answers or new perspectives. I don’t think I’ve ever regretted when I finally sit down to write when I’m feeling stuck. That said, having some prompts and direction for getting started can make all the difference.

Heaviness is the word I’m using and there are many others that may fit better for you: stuck, sticky, dense, thick, foggy, weighted, prickly, frozen … what’s yours?
----
✍️This week’s prompts are here for you if there’s something feeling heavy that you need help with or save this one for when you need it.

Where is the heaviness? Is it inside you or outside of you? Can you describe it without judgement? What does it want to say or do? How would it like to be different?

✨messy writers club meets tonight!!✨ and it's not too late to sign up ... link in comments

I caught myself over the last week not feeling like doing my morning writing practice. Life got busy and it easily became one of the things I could skip.

As the week went on, I could feel the build up. Like it was getting harder to sit down and write while at the same time feeling more necessary.

We all get stuck with something (or many things!!) holding us down and back from doing the life things that we actually know will make us feel better. That's my inspiration for this week's messy writers club writing prompts. We'll be writing through heaviness.

We start at 7pm(PT) tonight on Zoom and it's not too late to sign up! It's always drop-in and by donation, so you can join any session. I'll post the link to sign-up in the comments.

I'm curious, what's the thing that you push to the side when life gets busy that you know is also the thing that supports you when life gets busy?

(long read) --> For the first messy writers club theme we explored ‘object as inspiration’. Everyone chose a couple random objects nearby or imagined and this was the starting point for writing. This is one of my favourite ways to enter writing because what comes out is usually completely unexpected, usually very wise, and exactly what we need to hear.

Then in life’s funny way, I was thrown into a deep clean of my apartment over the weekend. I found myself picking up, dusting off and setting back most of the random everyday objects around my apartment. I released some things, I found a new spot for others and re-appreciated the sentiment (cried) and place certain things hold in my heart.

It felt like everything came back to life in a new way. It’s highly possible I’ve been influenced by movies like Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Pixar’s Toy Story series and the way they bring life to inanimate objects, but I really love this idea that everything around us has a personality or wisdom to share.

So this week, I encourage you to take a moment to notice the everyday objects around you. Pick out one or two that feel like they are calling your attention. Sit with it, hold it, feel it, listen to it.

✍️What story, lesson or wisdom does this object have to share? If you have two objects, what would their conversation look like?

Raise your hand if sitting down to do some reflective writing somehow keeps getting pushed to… another day. 🙋‍♀️

Maybe it’s overwhelming to know how to start.
Maybe you’re exhausted and it feels like too many extra steps to set up.
Maybe the inner critic is telling you it’s never going to be perfect.

These are some of the reasons I wanted to start messy writers club. A dedicated, low-pressure, guided space for reflective, creative writing, and messy life processing.

📅 We begin Tuesday, March 19, 2026
⏰ 7:00–8:00 PM (PDT)
📍 Meeting every other Tuesday on Zoom - drop-in when it feels right for you

✍️ No writing experience needed. No pressure to “be good.” Just a space to show up exactly as you are. We'll explore a new theme each session with a few prompts to play with.

Why am I so passionate about messy writing?

✍️Because I’m a self-proclaimed messy writer. I write lots of things all the time, but not much that needs to be shared publicly. I have been writing since I was an awkward teenager trying to make sense of the world. I have written myself through dark depressed states, confusing heartbreak and other messy stages of life.

For me, writing is grounding, clarifying and transformative. I truly believe there is magic in the connection from head to heart to hand to pen to paper… not necessarily always in that order.

I also know how vulnerable, uncomfortable and weird it can feel to start writing. Many of us carry some version of writing anxiety, perfectionism, or old school memories of trying to write the “right” thing.

That’s part of why I created messy writers club. This is a low-pressure, guided space to explore writing, creativity, reflection, and whatever needs to come out.

✨ Our first session begins Tuesday, May 19th @ 7pm (PDT)
If you’ve been craving a regular writing practice, a place to process, or simply an hour to reconnect with your own voice, I’d love to have you join us.
