Some experiences stay with us for years. Sometimes we want to talk about them, but we don’t know how people will respond.

Sometimes we don’t need advice or answers. We just need someone willing to listen.

Being present at a death can bring sadness, relief, confusion, tenderness, awkwardness, and even laughter. Our stories don’t always fit neatly into one emotion, and they don’t need to.

Sharing a story isn’t about finding a silver lining or making sense of everything. It’s about having the space to talk about what happened, how it felt, and what we carry with us.

And sometimes, hearing someone else’s story helps us understand our own a little differently. It reminds us that we’re not the only ones who’ve felt the way we do.

I’m a taphophile! Are you?

One day I’ll get to spend ALL my time in a cemetery…this one in fact! But for now, I just have to visit occasionally.

And I’m also someone who will never stop reminding you that the work death doulas do isn’t new at all.

It’s ancient work, mostly done by women.

However, it’s an emerging profession.

That part is new.

I’m also someone who will keep asking a very important question:

In a push to “regulate” this ancient practice, who will get to decide what aspects of my work are legitimate?

Whose knowledge and ways of knowing will be prioritized?

What will be pushed out, disallowed, or deemed unimportant?

I can take some guesses. And if you think about it, I bet you can too.

End of life doulas have been around forever. It’s an ancient practice, but only recently is it becoming a profession.

There are a LOT of very credible and important professions that aren’t subject to licensing or regulation. This isn’t the only way to ensure standards are met (or exceeded).

It’s one way. And kind of a lazy one at that.

Seriously. Lead with love. Lead with curiosity, and let them know it will help YOU…after all, they’re right! This isn’t really about them at all, is it?
