At this time, we are having to use online and digital media to stay connected as well as participating in a range of activities. By using smartphones, laptops and tablets, we can take advantage of a variety of activities, for example, if your loved one enjoys music, there are a great many ways to connect online for example there are virtual singalong sessions as well as dancing to music videos, concerts on YouTube and other social media.

With my dad who was a great storyteller, I was fortunate enough to be able to record his stories, this gave us an opportunity to spend many happy hours together talking about his life and the stories left by my dad continue to give a great source of comfort for us as a family.

Sharing life stories will also help you and your loved one to develop a deeper connection. Stories are not only about connecting with the past but they are also great ways to connect with the present which helps to make more memories, for example taking photographs of activities that you are currently doing, as well as planning future events, holidays, special times which will become future memories and stories to share.

Engaging with loved ones who have dementia can cause boredom and frustration.
This is a good time to share stories and memories when we all may have a little more time to spend with our loved ones. There are several ways that you can spark memories, for example, using objects from the past or using objects that may have significance or special event or moment attached to it.
Photographs are a great conversation starter and a way to reminisce about an event, holiday or people in the lives of a loved one which can spark great stories and memories.

Why SHARE?

I have been helping families since 2008 to understand the dementia journey. Having been on this journey with my dad for four years – 2008 to 2012, I quickly learned the importance of families having the knowledge, skills and confidence to help loved ones on the dementia journey. Since then I have been working to write, develop and deliver information sessions, workshops and training programs for professionals, volunteers and most importantly families. This online platform brings SHARE to you. I hope you will join me and together we can create a SHARE online community of our experiences and stories.

Welcome to SHARE

I am beginning my online SHARE journey of Supporting, Helping And looking at the Real lived Experience of taking care of a loved one with Dementia.
I have been working with families on a face to face basis and the current situation with COVID-19, is challenging us to work in different ways. It provides me with the opportunity to offer my family caregiving program SHARE online and a platform to share all our experiences and stories to help each other.
I hope you will bear with me over the coming weeks as I become more proficient and skilled in using these platforms and connecting with you.
