People often say,
"Love just wasn't enough."
I'm not always convinced that's what happened.
Sometimes love wasn't what faded.
Sometimes the self did.
In the beginning of a relationship, we often edit ourselves in ways that feel small.
We soften an opinion.
We hide a fear.
We don't bring up a need.
We become a little more agreeable.
A little less honest.
A little less visible.
Over time, those edits accumulate.
Eventually, two people aren't relating to each other anymore.
They're relating to carefully edited versions of one another.
Then the relationship begins to feel distant.
Uncertain.
Volatile.
Disconnected.
And we blame love.
But perhaps love wasn't the thing that changed.
Perhaps the relationship slowly lost access to the real people inside it.
Love doesn't thrive on perfection.
It thrives on contact.
And genuine contact requires authenticity.
Maybe the invitation isn't to love harder.
Maybe it's to edit yourself less.
Because every time we erase ourselves to preserve the relationship.....we quietly ask the relationship to love someone who isn't fully there.
Where have you been editing yourself in the name of love?
