I get asked this A LOT as a family doctor. And I get that it’s frustrating and worrying when your child seems to be ill all of the time or get back to back viruses! 🦠 But there is a good reason for all of these sick days >>>

I can assure you most likely there is nothing wrong with your child and here’s why >>>

It’s normal for young kids to get sick. Especially with respiratory viruses when they are at daycare. You may find that they have a constantly snotty nose. But being exposed to new viruses means that they are building their immunity for later in life >>>

Pre schoolers commonly get sick 6-8 times per year and this number thankfully reduces slightly when they start school 🏫 >>>

Our bodies are super clever and tough. We make antibodies which act as ‘memory cells’. Next time we come into contact with the same virus our body fights back fast meaning recovery is quicker and illness is usually milder >>>

I felt like I had so much time off when my first child started daycare as she was constantly sick. The first year was brutal! But it does get better. I promise. Keep going 💙

And if you are concerned then it’s always best to check in with your family doctor. We can always check your child’s CBC (to check that their white cells are healthy and doing their job).

Please share this post with a desperate parent who needs to hear this! 🤧

I became a doctor at 23… I was SO young! 👶🏼 and I saw an awful lot. Good and bad 😕

I actually think the Canadian pathway is better where you do your Bachelor’s first and THEN go into medicine. I do think becoming a doctor slightly later is a benefit.

My career path was heading towards sports medicine in the UK but then we chose to emigrate to Canada with 3 young children. I work full time as a Family Doctor👩🏼‍⚕️ and decided to pivot and launch a business on the side! 🤯

I hope this inspires you if you are thinking of a career move or even a country move! ✈️ we are still so young in our 30’s and 40’s 🫶🏼

☕️ Could your morning coffee or tea be too hot? 👀

A large new study from The University of Oxford, England has found that drinking very hot drinks may increase the risk of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, a type of oesophageal cancer.

Researchers analysed data from almost 1 million people and followed them for more than a decade.

People who reported drinking their drinks ‘hot’ were nearly twice at risk of developing oesophageal cancer compared with those who drank them warm.

Why might this be?

The concern isn’t the coffee or tea itself. Repeated exposure to very high temperatures can cause thermal injury to the lining of the oesophagus, potentially contributing to inflammation and cellular damage over time.

SO! ☕️ Let your tea or coffee cool until it’s comfortable to drink rather than drinking it while it’s scalding hot. AND no more ordering extra hot drinks at Starbucks or your usual coffee place! 👎🏽

This study was observational, so it shows an association rather than proving that hot drinks directly cause cancer. Other more established risk factors - particularly smoking and alcohol, remain much more important contributors to oesophageal cancer risk.

There are many symptoms of perimenopause that you may not be aware of. Symptoms can start in your mid 30’s and can greatly affect your quality of life.

Here’s what to look out for. If you are suffering or know of a friend who possibly is - this post is for you 🤍

It is so important that we do talk about it, as perimenopause was ignored for a long time and older generations were denied access to HRT.

Share with every woman you know over 35! 💌

ADHD? Mom brain? Or is it perimenopause… it could well be! Fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone can markedly affect brain function leading to brain fog, restlessness and poor memory.

Fluctuating progesterone levels cause disrupted sleep. Starting a micronised progesterone may be beneficial and a lot of perimenopausal women find that this greatly helps their sleep 😴

Many perimenopausal women are wrongly diagnosed with anxiety and depression when in fact they are going through perimenopause.

Estrogen interacts with serotonin pathways involved in mood, motivation and emotional regulation. Rapid estrogen fluctuations can therefore cause irritability, anxiety, low mood or feeling unusually emotional.

Progesterone interacts with GABA, one of the brain’s calming systems. Fluctuations can contribute to anxiety, irritability and feeling on edge.

Low estrogen causes fat to be deposited around the abdomen. I often get asked if metabolism slows during menopause - studies show that metabolism is well maintained until our 60’s. HRT can help stubborn belly fat but lifestyle changes are just as important in order to reduce body fat and maintain muscle mass.

Any questions? Speak to your family doctor 👩🏼‍⚕️ and share with a friend who needs to hear this! 💜

5 things I do to prevent back to school illness in my own kids 🎒 🦠

Not many parents know about number 2!

What other prevention measures do you have?

Boost that Vitamin C with bell peppers, oranges, kiwi, broccoli and strawberries (and a multivitamin if your child is a fussy eater)! 🫑 🍊🥦

Saline moistens the nose so improving children’s natural defence mechanism helping prevent germs from entering the body 🦠

Vitamin D 600IU daily.
It boosts our natural immunity, reduces the likelihood of respiratory infections and also helps sleep - and we know that good sleep also improves immunity 😴

This is self explanatory! ✋🏽

Flu can be very serious - even in kids. The flu vaccine is not 💯 effective but it does reduce the risk of catching flu and importantly reduces the chance of serious illness and complications from flu 💉

Who will my kid get their athletic ability from?

Mom or dad? 🧐

Athletic talent is not a simple matter of inheriting one gene from one parent. It is complex.

Interestingly, maternal mitochondrial DNA gives mothers a special influence on endurance and energy metabolism 🏃🏼‍♀️

Who did your child get their athletic ability from?

Ladies, do you know when you should start having mammograms? 🎀

If you’re in Canada, you may be surprised to learn that mammogram eligibility isn’t exactly the same across the country.

🇨🇦 Canadian Cancer Society recommendation:
Women at average risk aged 40–74 should have a mammogram every 2 years.

Provincial screening programs have different eligibility rules. Some allow self-referral from age 40, while others start routine screening later. In BC you can self refer from 40 and you don’t need to have a family physician.

⚠️ Higher risk? You may need screening earlier or more frequently, depending on your personal and family history and other risk factors.

And remember: screening is for people without breast symptoms. If you notice a lump, ni**le discharge or skin changes don’t wait for your next screening mammogram - speak to your healthcare provider.

Breast screening guidelines are changing as the evidence evolves, so check your province’s current program.

Make sure you self examine your b***s regularly! ✋🏽
