I will be sharing a very personal part of my recent health journey, and what it was like to move from being the nurse to being the patient. I will talk about hearing the words “you could have died,” learning to receive and accept care instead of providing it, navigating the healthcare system from a different perspective, and the unexpected lessons this experience has given me.

Most of all, I will be reflecting on how this chapter is shaping me into a more compassionate, grounded, and present nurse.

This Saturday I am excited to start a Legacy project with the residents of Orchard Valley Independent Living. This will be my first time in the role as a End of Life Doula. I am excited and nervous. This Legacy project is kind of a test drive to doing more in the future. I'll keep you posted.

As part of becoming a member of the End-of-Life Doula Association of Canada, I’m required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of experience in end-of-life care and planning.

This includes things like:

📜 Legacy projects
💬 Life review conversations
💗 Guidance through important end-of-life preparations — for yourself, your family, or aging parents.

My name is Erika Sohni, and I am a nurse, educator, and certified end-of-life doula. After over two decades of working in health care, I’ve seen how unprepared most people are for death and how this unpreparedness leads to unsupported, stressful and sometimes awful passings for the dying and their families. What if we could change those outcomes to one of celebration and acknowledgement of the dying and their legacy. Where the dying and their families are supported to approach death with awareness, choice, dignity and love.
Through Lumina Path, I offer a safe space for reflection, conversation, and legacy-building — helping individuals and families navigate this journey with light and grace.

What Is an End-of-Life Doula? What services do i offer?

An end-of-life doula provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their loved ones as they approach the end of life.
This may include:

Gentle guidance through planning and decision-making

Supporting family members before, during, and after death

Helping create meaning, closure, and peace

Services Offered:

Advance care and end-of-life planning

Emotional and spiritual support

Family communication and guided conversations

Grief and transition support

Legacy and memory projects
