It can be really confusing to look at your life, know that you’re safe and still feel your body react to a change in tone, a disagreement or someone pulling away.

You may tell yourself that you’re overreacting or that you should be past this by now.

But your inner child didn’t learn about safety because someone explained it. It learned from what happened again and again.

Feeling safer now also comes through experience. It grows when you speak honestly and are still accepted, set a boundary and stay connected, or get something wrong and experience repair.

In my free live webinar, Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough, I’ll talk more about why understanding the past doesn’t always change how you feel in the present and what relational, group-based healing can offer.

Join me live on Friday, September 18th at 10am Pacific Time. Everyone who registers will receive the replay.

When you’re triggered, your attention narrows to whatever feels most urgent.

That means your body reacts quickly and the tools that feel obvious when you’re calm become much harder to reach.

You may forget the breathing exercise, the boundary you practised or even that you’re allowed to pause before answering.

That’s why you can explain your trauma clearly afterwards but still people-please, shut down, panic or say something you regret in the moment.

Insight matters because it helps you understand why this happens and take away some of the blame. Changing what happens next also takes practice and new experiences, especially in the relationships where these patterns show up.

In my free live webinar, Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough, I’ll explain why everything you know can feel impossible to access when you’re triggered and what relational, group-based healing can offer.

Understanding gives you language, context and a way to stop blaming yourself. But in order to heal, you also need opportunities to do something different while the pattern is happening.

In my free live webinar, Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough, we’ll explore what relational, group-based healing can offer when insight hasn’t changed the response.

One of the hardest things about self-awareness is watching yourself repeat a pattern and still feeling unable to stop.

You hear yourself agree, overexplain, withdraw or ask for reassurance, and you know exactly what’s happening.

Noticing it in real time is progress. But changing it takes more than noticing. It takes new experiences and chances to practise a different response.

That’s exactly what we’ll explore in my free live webinar, Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough.

People-pleasing makes SO much sense when you look at what you learned growing up.

Understanding that can bring relief and take away some of the blame because you know it may have helped you stay connected or avoid conflict or danger when you had very little power.

The problem is that reading about people-pleasing only gives you an explanation. It doesn’t stop the automatic yes from coming out when someone asks something of you.

Changing that response takes new experiences.

And that’s where relational healing comes in.

The patterns we learned in relationships often show up again in relationships. A safe relational space gives us somewhere to notice them, try something different and experience what happens next.

Progress might look like catching the people-pleasing sooner, pausing before you agree or staying on your own side when someone isn’t happy with your answer.

That takes more than knowing where the pattern came from.

In my free live webinar, Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough, I’ll explain why insight can leave us repeating patterns we already understand and what relational, group-based healing can offer.

You can read the books, listen to the podcasts, spend years in therapy and understand exactly where your trauma responses come from… And then all of a sudden 👇

Conflict starts and your chest tightens.

You start people-pleasing, shutting down or worrying that someone you love is going to leave.

All that insight can feel impossible to access in the moment.

This is exactly what we’re talking about in my new free live webinar: Why Understanding Your Trauma Isn’t Enough

Join me on Friday, September 18th at 10am Pacific Time to explore why understanding what happened to us doesn’t always change what happens when we’re triggered, and what relational, group-based healing can offer.

You’ll also have space to ask questions live, and everyone who registers will receive the replay.

At the end, I’ll share more about a new live weekend intensive built around one central idea: inner child work is about parenting ourselves.

I’m announcing something free tomorrow, and I think it’s going to speak to anyone who’s ever thought: I understand why I do this. So why am I still doing it? 😕

If you’ve done the reading, the therapy, the podcasts and the self-reflection, but still find yourself falling into the same patterns when something actually triggers you, this is for you.

I’ll share all the details tomorrow.

P.S. Make sure you’re following and have your notifications switched on so you don’t miss the chance to be involved! ❤️

Perfectionism can be exhausting because the pressure you put on yourself rarely stays contained to the thing you’re trying to get right!

It can follow you into relationships.

Into how you handle feedback.

Into how long you replay mistakes.

Into how quickly you assume someone is disappointed in you.

The difficult part is that perfectionism can look very functional from the outside. You might be organised, reliable, thoughtful and incredibly conscientious.

But if getting things wrong regularly brings up shame or fear about how other people will see you, the cost is much bigger than simply being hard on yourself.

Part of healing can be learning that disappointment doesn’t always mean disconnection, and that making a mistake doesn’t automatically put your place in a relationship at risk ❤️

When you get something wrong, what feels hardest: the mistake itself, or what you think it might mean about you? 🤔

08/27/2026

Yes, hyper-independence can make you incredibly capable. It can also make it very hard to let anyone get close enough to support you! 👀

If relying on other people has felt disappointing, unpredictable or unsafe, doing everything yourself can start to feel like the only sensible option.

You learn to solve the problem before anyone notices there is one. You minimise what you need. You accept help only when you’ve run out of alternatives.

Over time, that can make independence feel less like a choice.

Healing can include noticing where that lack of choice shows up, and slowly experimenting with relationships where support feels more reliable.

What feels harder for you: asking for support, or receiving it when it’s offered? 🤔

Sometimes it can be easier to recognize the impact of something that happened than the impact of something we needed and repeatedly didn’t receive.

There may be no single memory attached to emotional absence. Sometimes we see it later in how difficult it feels to need people, receive comfort or trust that support will be there.

Making room for that doesn’t diminish other forms of childhood trauma. It simply gives us more language for understanding the experiences that shaped us.

Can you relate to finding the impact of what was missing hard to put into words? 🤔
