Yoga is so much more than poses. Asana is just one of 8 limbs. Off the mat, I've been leaning into Niyama; the self-study of discipline, clarity, contentment, and surrender.

Since my mom's passing, that's been my practice. Sometimes it looks quiet, even lazy, but it's where what we practice on the mat shows up for the real moments in our day to day life.

Come explore yoga with me, on and off the mat.

The concept of Santosha. Contentment or satisfaction of your current status.

Nature has a way of always teaching us beautiful lessons. This weekend enjoy the beauty of the "flawed" trees, plants, and flowers. And realize that as humans we deserve the same acceptance.

We all contribute our own beauty to this world. Beauty isnt only skin deep. Beauty can also be your character. Love yourself and enjoy this weekend.

Bridge Pose has a few benefits that I love.
It opens the chest and shoulders (nice after a long computer day). I also like that it strengthens your back, glutes, and legs, while also promoting flexibility of spine and hip flexors.

The neck can be an area of concern: Elevate hips less, if you feel too much pressure on the back of the neck.

The time between trigger and recovery has a name. I call it "recovery latency". It is the time it takes your nervous system to return to baseline after a trigger or an emotional reaction.

Some of us have a harder time recovering. Our nervous system is struggling to recover.

It would be great if we were never triggered, but that isn't possible, so the goal becomes to shorten your latency recovery time. Why? So you can feel safe, regulated, and calm. You'll be a happier person, and those around you will also benefit.

Garland or Yogic Squat pose is a great pose for strengthening your core, helping with balance, and stretching your hips.

This pose can be difficult if you have knee issues, or tight hips. Angie shows modifications using a block and the wall, to help you maintain the integrity of the pose while keeping your body safe.

Distraction vs avoidance. When our emotions are heavy, we are often told to sit with them. Not to avoid them. Although avoidance is not healthy, distraction can be a temporary coping mechanism to help relieve some of the pain.

Distract yourself then come back to the emotion and deal with it with a fresh set of eyes or with a lighter heart.

Butterfly pose is a common pose but can become more difficult if you have tight hips, or issue with lower back.

We opted to show a reclining Butterfly to provide the most support for the body to relax into this pose.
