Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists do more than just work on speech? We also help individuals with language delays and disorders. Common concerns and reasons for referral include: limited vocabulary, incorrect grammar or word order, using shorter sentences than expected based on age, difficulties with clearly or concisely expressing thoughts and ideas, difficulties following directions and answering questions, and/or difficulties with understanding words, sentences and stories.

I was so excited for this movie to come out and it did not disappoint! I highly recommend Disney’s Out Of My Mind for your next family movie night. Great lessons on resiliency, inclusion, presuming competence, and my personal favourite, how life changing a robust AAC (augmentative/alternative communication) system can be. Let’s continue to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to find their own voice and to be heard.

Have you ever wondered what exactly happens in a speech therapy session? I took these pictures as I cleaned up after each appointment yesterday. The wide range of activities highlights how different therapy sessions might look depending on the age and interests of the child and the communication goals that we are targeting. Sessions can be scheduled for 30 minutes to 1 hour and part of each session includes parent coaching/teaching so that skills can be worked on at home too. There is no minimum or maximum age, and there are no pre-requisite skills needed. It's completely ok if your child isn't able to sit at a table and complete structured activities. SLPs are experts at adjusting to meet the individual needs of each child and family!

When you fully commit to being a mime for Halloween, and your mom is an SLP who loves AAC 😊.
If you zoom in, Caleb is pointing to picture symbols to communicate “want” and “candy” using a flip and talk communication book. This is an example of a low-tech augmentative/alternative communication system that can be used by children who struggle to communicate using spoken language.
