NICHOLSON: Maxine Anne Louise
February 22, 1942 - May 28, 2026

Our heads had been preparing for this day, our hearts could not consume the moment it came. Maxine Nicholson, aka “Grandma Dynamite” died suddenly with Mike by her side, but peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026. She was born February 22, 1942 in Wolseley, SK.
She leaves to mourn her four children: Mike (Susan), Cyndi, Nadine, Trina (Scot); eight grandchildren: Justin, Amber (Cole), Brendan, Danté, Lucan, Karlen, Charlie and Anna; and great-grandchildren Rosie and Max who absolutely brighten Gigi’s day on their frequent visits. Maxine also had an honourary daughter, Tammy Holmes who was a fierce advocate and friend of Mom’s right to the end. The family thanks Tammy for always being there for her.
Maxine was predeceased by the love of her life Larry who passed 11 years ago. If anything gives the family comfort during this time, it’s knowing she’s back with him. She did not stop talking about him after he died, and even though at times the family remembers the story differently, she revered him in life and death.
Maxine was the youngest in a rowdy, but super fun French-Catholic family. She was the last remaining sibling as all her siblings and in-laws predeceased her. It was for this reason she was loved by all her nephews and nieces. A particular mention to Carol Soles and Cheryl Starnes for treating Mom like their own. It was a group effort to bring Mom to her final days, but those two ladies went above and beyond. Everyone leaned in to look after her as she was the last remaining link to the Dureault family. Her mind was sharp and she loved to recount the stories of shenanigans from her youth. The Dureault family was tight and celebrated, well just about anything together. Singing around the piano, games, and general social levity was always part of the mix. The cousins recall being towed to and from many a family occasion in the station wagon with the wood panelling. The fondest of times for most.
Maxine started out as a daycare provider, transition to motel owner, then restaurant owner, caterer and eventually the proprietor of Mike’s Beach Bar with Mike and Larry. She was a hard worker, something she passed onto all four of her children. It was 84 years well lived and for brevity, we’re going to focus on the last decade of Mom’s life, otherwise this could be a lengthy ordeal. What we want to share is that Mom was the most peoplely of people around. A true extrovert before the word was commonplace. She loved social functions, long phone calls, visits, events but most of all -- Happy Hour! It was time for her to gather with so many friends she gathered along the way. From Canora, SK to Mesa, AZ to Watrous. She got her name “Grandma Dynamite” from being feisty under all circumstances. She had her favourites, they knew who they were, but boy oh boy, if you weren’t one of them! You knew that too! She liked to make people laugh and have a good time. She endeared herself to others quickly because of her modest and earnest charm. We know Grandma Dynamite’s spark lives on in others through the immediate outpouring of condolences when others heard the news. It’s been a real joy for the family to hear of the stories being shared.
There is peace in our hearts knowing she did not suffer, and will live in eternity with not only Dad, but all her siblings that pre-deceased her. If you believe that death is not a punishment rather a reward for a job well done, we say “well-done Mom”. You will be missed by so many.
Mom’s final days were spent at the Watrous Manitou Lodge. Sincere appreciation to Dr. Shiva for journeying with Mom the past few months. She adored and appreciated the many activities they had for the residents to bring some joy to their days.
A Celebration of Mom’s Life will be held at the Watrous Civic Centre, 404 Main Street, Watrous, SK on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously asks you donate to the Manitou Lodge – Activity Dept., PO Box 130, Watrous, SK, S0K 4T0. HALLBORG: Margaret Maxine (nee Parks)
April 6, 1933 – May 26, 2026

Born to Cecil William Parks and Ina Bell (nee Janes) near Secretan, Saskatchewan on April 6th, 1933. Not long after, the family moved to Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Russell, siblings Raymond, Josephine, Lyle, Wesley, Hazel, Nora, Cecil, Patricia, Gordon, Dorothy and Darlene, and grandson Corey Wayne Harding.
Maxine always told stories of her trips to school on the horses, cleaning the Pleasantsite School for a nickel, or when she would hit the boys over the head with her lunch pail. She would share her stories of racing her horse Ranger with her peers, and their adventures fishing and life on a homestead in the years following the Great Depression.
On August 3, 1957, she married the love of her life, Russell Douglas Hallborg on a trip to Phillips, Montana. From there, they followed Russell’s career of managing Grain Elevators for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Along the way, they grew a family – Murray, Randall, Sherry, Rodney and Stuart, before settling down in Watrous. In Watrous, Maxine worked for the Bakery, the Esso, and eventually the Long Lake School Division, retiring celebrating nearly 20 years of ensuring the facilities were spotless.
Maxine epitomized a strong, hardworking mother who not only helped raise her younger siblings after the early passing of her parents, but to go on and raise a family of her own, offering to look after the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the many grand-pups throughout the years.
As requested, there will be no funeral or service. In her notes, she had written “If by chance you wish to remember me, do it with a kind word or deed to someone who needs you … If you do as I have asked, I will live forever”.
She is survived by her children, Murray (Olga), Randall, Rodney, Sherry (Doug) and Stuart (Tammy), her grandchildren, Brandon (Brittany), Devin (Carlene), Angela (Sean), Melanie (Gordie), Dustin, Sydney (Walker), and Elizabeth. She is also survived by her great grand children – Chase, Chloe, Abbigail, Brantley, Hunter, Tanner, Kiera, and Jordyn (Ed), along with many other family members near and far.

“So remember this my darling
For it is very true.
If ever you’re apart from me,
I’ll search till I find you”.
- Heather Patricia Ward
I Promise I’ll Find You
