I was listening to the radio the other day and the song "Backup Plan" by Bailey Zimmerman and Luke Combs came on. Now, I know country music isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think the concept of this song is relatable for everyone. The lyric that stood out was simple: when you fall down, getting back up is the only backup plan you need.
Moving Past the Past
As a counselor, it made me think of the profound wisdom shared by trauma expert Dr. Bessel van der Kolk in his book, The Body Keeps the Score. He famously reminds us that "resilience is the product of agency: knowing that what you do can make a difference."
When life knocks us down, it isn't just a mental challenge—our whole nervous system feels the impact.
• The Trap: We often look for quick escapes or try to think our way out of pain.
• The Reality: The brain cannot simply order the body to feel safe.
• The Solution: True recovery means learning how to safely inhabit your body and tolerate your feelings.
Rewrite Your Rules
Getting back up does not mean pretending you never fell. It means building a friendly relationship with yourself so you can face the future with a visceral sense of safety.
While you can navigate this journey on your own, partnering with a skilled counselor can make the path to getting back up a whole lot smoother, clearer, and easier to handle. Therapy provides the safe connection you need to regain your footing and feel in charge of your life again.
