‎If David Irinam were hepatitis B, he would know who to infect!
‎
‎Yes no one deserves to suffer at the hands of this unforgiving enemy, but definitely
‎✓ Not the young promising and untapped generation
‎✓ Not the middle income earners
‎✓ Probably not the people I know who have already been suffering, who can't afford their further diagnosis talkless of affording the cost of consulting a specialist (Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist).
‎✓ Not those who can't afford to refill their meds this time; just to survive!
‎
‎I wouldn't have infected those who could still afford all of these, but I would have rather been kind to those whom I already conquered.
‎
‎✓ I wouldn't have infected the natives of nations whose leaders and policy makers are yet to make investments, towards creating awareness or evidence based interventions towards the 2030 WHO viral hepatitis elimination goal. (Even when am kind to those already fighting for my elimination!)
‎
‎If I were Hepatitis B,
‎I would have rather considered a more romantic and attractive look that would have earned me a suitor in the form of a funder, whose role would be to provide me with my meds, my doctor, and my caregiver, just as my partner diseases have earned their intervention funds.
‎
‎I am under funded (sometimes; not at all), misunderstood, neglected, abandoned, and left all to myself. From my inmost core to my outer shell I am not under any attention or care!
‎
‎Unfortunately, I am not hepatitis B!

‎Hepatitis B has further proceeded without prudence to become what it is; ruthless, crippling and unforgiving.
‎
‎This is what we talk about on World Hepatitis Day (WHD) on every 28th July.
‎
‎Ensure you get tested, vaccinated, or treated early because Hepatitis B is not David Irinam.

‎---"Whose child? Not mine; We all take care of our own"---
‎
‎While some feast, others are forgotten.
‎
‎Some children are visible at the table, while others are unseen on the street.
‎
‎...That unseen child is Hepatitis B!.
‎
‎Hepatitis B: the neglected child of African transmittable diseases; silent. deadly. ignored.
‎Yet millions of African children and adults live with it, without screening, vaccines, or treatment.
‎
‎Every child matters. Every life counts.
‎
‎When we leave vulnerable sufferers behind, we leave a part of ourselves behind. Except we wish to silence our consciences.
‎Many do not know their status. Few have access to screening, vaccines, or treatment.
‎
‎But it doesn’t have to be this way.
‎
‎As leaders and policymakers, let’s take care of our own, and others:
‎✓ Expand free community screening
‎✓ Provide and increase access to HBV vaccines
‎✓ Support treatment for those who need it
‎✓ Train and equip our health workers

‎Yes, it can be done!
‎
‎Having worked with next to nothing, our dedicated team of volunteer hepatitis B advocates have reached another milestone: a deliberate intervention approach to hepatitis B elimination by 2030.
‎
‎This is a duty and a wake-up call to our political leaders, policymakers, and those responsible for citizens.
‎
‎While our programs continue, our reports shall be forwarded to the relevant authorities. However, we are passionately calling on Local Government Council leadership, Honorable Members of Parliament and State Assemblies, the Cross River State Government, and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through the relevant Ministries and Development Agencies to consciously invest in hepatitis B elimination.
‎
‎To complement our efforts, we are calling on leaders and private citizens to support:
‎1. Provision of vaccines to immunize and protect uninfected populations
‎2. Provision of medications and treatment support for those with chronic hepatitis B who meet treatment eligibility criteria
‎3. Training and retraining of healthcare providers on hepatitis B treatment and management
‎4. Extensive promotion of hepatitis B awareness, sensitization, and community outreach campaigns
‎5. Support/sponsorship of continuous screening exercises to identify those silently living with hepatitis B.
‎
‎We did not do it alone. We have received sponsorship and support from the Hepatitis B Foundation through the Coalition Against Hepatitis Among People of African Origin (CHIPO) and the African Hepatitis B Advocacy Coalition (ABAC), as well as partnership from the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA),
Civil Society Network On Hepatitis Nigeria (CISNH-Nig), in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Health, Department of Public Health, and Cross River State Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development.
‎
‎To ensure community ownership and partnership, we also recognize other valued community-based organizations, particularly Ke'ebekwarra Itanung Foundation and Bekwarra Committee of Mega Friends, Calabar, among others.
‎
‎We continually acknowledge our selfless donors whose endorsement and financial support enabled us from December 2022 to date.

The Bekwarra Hepatitis B Support and Advocacy Initiative celebrates one of its most dedicated partners and sponsors, Ass. Prof. John Adinya Odey, as he is set to be installed as the 41st Star President of the Rotary Club of Hill-Top, Calabar.

‎The installation ceremony will hold on 18th July 2026 at The Dome, Calabar Municipal Gardens, Calabar, Cross River State.
‎
‎Prof. Odey has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to community health and development. Through his support, Bekwarra Hepatitis B Support and Advocacy Initiative has been able to expand testing, awareness, and advocacy across Bekwarra LGA and Cross River North. His belief that health is a right, not a privilege, aligns fully with our mission to end hepatitis-related stigma and save lives.

‎Hepatitis B: A “Medical” or “Spiritual” Condition?
‎
‎A lot of people have been convinced that hepatitis B infection is more of a spiritual than a medical condition.
‎
‎Here are the facts:
‎
‎If hepatitis B were a spiritual problem, diagnosis would rely on traditional methods, not medical tests.
‎
‎Across many parts of the world, especially in Africa, traditional diagnosis often rests on superstitious methods (mirrors, calabash, cowries, native pots, etc). These are consultative approaches used to determine causes and treatment.
‎
‎Medically, the first-line screening for hepatitis B uses a scientific method called ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay). It’s a lab test based on immunology and chromatography, not rituals.
‎
‎Hepatitis B is a blood-borne disease. It’s found in blood and transmitted mainly through infected blood, contaminated sharp objects, mother-to-child, and unprotected s*x, among other routes.
‎
‎People believe HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid, sickle cell, asthma, hypertension, and diabetes are medical conditions. Yet the same people have been convinced that hepatitis B is not.
‎
‎Hepatitis B cannot be diagnosed in a lab and then treated with herbal concoctions, spells, or incantations.
‎
‎This simple knowledge should guide patients, caregivers, health workers, policymakers, and researchers while we wait for a cure.
‎
‎✓ Hepatitis B is a medical condition
‎✓ Hepatitis B is an infectious disease
‎✓ Hepatitis B is a silent killer
‎
‎However:
‎✓ Hepatitis B is vaccine-preventable
‎✓ Hepatitis B is treatable with medicine
‎✓ Hepatitis B is not a death sentence
‎
‎Be kind to yourself and your loved ones. Test early. Vaccinate. Treat early. Hepatitis B is real.
