HOMOEOPATHY FOR MUSCULOSKELETAL DISEASES AND GERIATRIC HEALTH

Musculoskeletal health is central to mobility, independence, and quality of life-especially in older adults. As populations age globally, the burden of degenerative joint diseases, osteoporosis, chronic back pain, and frailty continues to rise. According to World Health Organisation, musculoskeletal conditions are among the leading causes of disability worldwide.

The musculoskeletal system includes bones, joints, ligaments and connective tissues. With aging, natural physiological changes occur which results in :

- Reduction in bone mineral density
- Degeneration of cartilage
- Loss of muscle mass
- Reduced joint flexibility
- Slower tissue repair
Common musculoskeletal disorders include:

- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Cervical and lumber spondylosis
- Frozen shoulder
- Chronic low back pain
These conditions coexist with other age related disorders such as diabetes, Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases making planning treatment more complex.

Hence there is a growing interest in integrative and supportive therapies that aim to minimize adverse effects while improving overall health. In geriatric care, managing these chronic conditions requires a holistic, individualized, and safe approach.
Homoeopathy considers the patient entire mental, emotional and physical state, as well as their miasmatic background, rather than just treating the affected joint or muscle.

Studies, including data from the EP13-MSD cohort (epidemiological survey conducted in France assessed real world impact of different medicine),indicate that patients using homoeopathic care for chronic musculoskeletal disease experienced similar clinical improvements to those in conventional care but with roughly half the exposure to NSAIDs(non- steroidal anti inflammatory drugs).

Homoeopathy is often used alongside conventional treatments (like physiotherapy)to enhance overall recovery and improve quality of life. Recent evidence also indicates that individualized homoeopathic therapy can achieve clinical outcomes comparable to conventional management in chronic musculoskeletal pain without producing adverse effects. Integrating such approaches within healthcare systems has been associated with patient satisfaction, cost effectiveness and safety. By prescribing a well selected constitutional remedy the aim is to enhance the body’s self regulatory mechanisms and reduce the intensity and recurrence of chronic musculoskeletal complaints.

In cases where genetic factors contribute to early degeneration, recurrent inflammation, or autoimmune responses homoeopathy seeks to

modulate the individual’s response, potentially slowing progression and improving overall resilience. Remedies are selected on the basis of symptom totality, thereby offering personalized care.

Musculoskeletal diseases and geriatric health are a significant public health concern in Sikkim, contributing heavily to the disease burden in the state. Clinically observed ,women in Sikkim report higher rates of musculoskeletal pain compared to men .

RISK FACTORS include prolonged awkward postures, heavy lifting and for some, sedentary work. High BMI (Body Mass Index ) and to***co use are positively associated with higher rates of musculoskeletal pain and also higher perceived stress levels are strongly associated with increased MS pain.

CONCLUSION: Homoeopathy approaches musculoskeletal and geriatric conditions holistically focusing on symptom similarity and constitutional treatment. It aims to relieve pain, improve mobility, slow degenerative processes, and enhance the overall wellbeing of elderly patients.
