Know Your Genotype
What is genotype?
🛑Genotype is the type of haemoglobin genes a person inherits from their parents. Common types include AA, AS, and SS.
📌AA: Normal haemoglobin genotype.
📌AS: Sickle cell trait. The person usually does not have sickle cell disease but can pass the sickle gene to their children.
📌SS: Usually associated with sickle cell disease.
❤️ Why is genotype important?
Knowing your genotype helps you understand your health and make informed decisions, especially when planning a family.
For example, when AS × AS have a child, there is:
25% chance of AA
50% chance of AS
25% chance of SS
These chances apply to each pregnancy.

🩸 Understanding Blood Groups and Their Importance in Blood Transfusion
📌Blood groups are classifications of blood based on the presence or absence of specific markers (antigens) found on red blood cells.
📌The most important systems are the ABO blood group system and the Rhesus (Rh) system.
The ABO Blood Groups
Group A: Has A antigen and anti-B antibodies.
Group B: Has B antigen and anti-A antibodies.
Group AB: Has both A and B antigens and no anti-A or anti-B antibodies. It can receive red blood cells from all ABO groups.
Group O: Has no A or B antigens but has both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. O negative is considered the universal red cell donor.
📌The Rh System
Rh positive (+): Has the Rh D antigen.
Rh negative (-): Does not have the Rh D antigen.
Why Blood Groups Matter in Transfusion
Before a blood transfusion, the donor and recipient blood groups must be compatible. If incompatible blood is given, the recipient's antibodies can attack the donor red blood cells, causing: ❌ Agglutination (clumping of red cells)
❌ Haemolysis (destruction of red cells)
❌ Severe transfusion reactions that may be life-threatening
That is why laboratories perform: ✅ ABO blood grouping
✅ Rh typing
✅ Crossmatching tests

Have you ever bordered about why a particular procedure is carryout on you (patient) when you are in the laboratory?🤷🤷 or are you always afraid to ask questions about a particular procedure?😨😨
you have the right to know what, why and how any sample is collected. 😊😊
so anytime you find your self there you can ask "doctor why you de collect blood na for ma hand instead of ma finger😏😏".
Being relax by asking the questions will also reduce pains(psychology).

"You don chop?" 😁😁
These are some of the words that patients recieved when ever they want to collect blood sample from them especially in the morning.🌄
These questions are not for fancy😏 or to know whether you always eat or not😁.
Lab technicians ask patients if they have eaten before blood collection because; 📌 Food can change the levels of some substances in the blood and affect test results.
📌 Some tests, like blood glucose and lipid (cholesterol/triglyceride) tests, require fasting because eating can increase their levels.
📌 Food can make blood samples cloudy (lipemic) and interfere with laboratory analysis.
🛑 So it is always advisable not to eat in the morning before going for check- up in the hospitals especially for diabetic patients.

I have always thought how uneasy laboratory technicians feel when certain samples are brought to the lab by patients until I discovered this profession is a calling ☎️☎️.
📌Imagine your first analysis for the day is a sputum sample (from cough). while others take Thier breakfast with tea and bread 🍞
📌 imagine you are just returning from launch just to see a stool cup 3/4 filled with stool samples just for you to do a macroscopic examination (color, odour, consistency).
📌 imagine before signing out for the day you have to do some biochemical properties urine.
✅ saving lives is always the top priority of every health practitioner

laboratory technicians are blood suckers 😁😁.
Have you ever wander what happened to the blood collected from you when ever you are sick 🥵 in the hospital?.
Various analysis are being carryout on the samples collected from patients.
laboratory test analysis carryout using blood samples most often include
,📌 WIDAL test: test for the presence of the the bacterium ( salmonella paratyphi) whose presence indicates a typhoid infection.
📌 Maleria parasite (MP) which involves counting the number of maleria parasite using a microscope or Rapid Diagnostic test ( RDT) that test for the presence of antibodies produced against the maleria antigens.
📌 complete blood count (CBC) that that analysis the levels of various parameters in blood such as your blood levels (HB), White blood cells, platelets etc.
Now is it a myth that lab technicians are blood suckers 😁😁

BE MINDFUL OF GOOD DAYS

The most dangerous day for an ulcer patient is not the day you feel pain.

It’s the day you wake up and feel perfectly fine.
No burning…
No discomfort…
No warning sign…

And suddenly, you relax.
You start telling yourself:
“Ahh, I think I’m getting better now”
“Let me just eat small cake/ bread today, nothing will happen”
“One soft drink won’t hurt”

“Let me delay food, I’m okay today”
And that’s where the problem begins…

Ulcer is very tricky
That “peaceful” feeling you get should not be abused

It is just your stomach telling you theirs hope of healing.

Inside, that lining is still sensitive.
It is still healing.
It is still vulnerable.

Don't ever forget that.

Don't because there is no pain at the moment… you think everything is back to normal.

If you are not careful, a few hours later… or sometimes the next day…
The burning may returns.
The discomfort comes back.
And sometimes, it feels even worse than before.

Now you start wondering:
“But I was fine yesterday, what happened?”

What happened is simple…
You used one good day to destroy many days of healing.

You see healing from ulcer is not about how you feel for one day.

It is about what you consistently do—even when you feel okay.

That is the real discipline.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ON YOUR ‘GOOD DAYS ’?
Treat your stomach/body like it is still fragile—because it is.

_Eat at the right right time

_Avoid your known triggers

_Still Go for gentle, safe meals

_Don’t over-test your body by engaging in activities above your capacity. That headache, that palpitations, that weakness will all return in folds.

Don’t let one quiet day deceive you.

Real healing is built in the days you feel okay…
Not just the days you are in pain.
