🌍 WORLD MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH DAY

✨THEME: A CALL TO ACT✨

Maternal mental health matters. Yet many mothers continue to suffer in silence due to stigma, lack of support, financial hardship, and limited access to care. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 5 women in developing countries experience mental health challenges during pregnancy or after childbirth.

At GIVE IT A MEANING AGAIN (GIMA), we believe supporting mothers means creating safe, stigma-free spaces where they can heal, feel heard, and access support through our Safe Space to Strength Model.

This is a call to families, communities, health workers, and policymakers to prioritize maternal mental health because when mothers are mentally well, families and communities thrive. 💚💜

SAFE, SEEN & HEARD 💚

In partnership with the Presbyterian Church Soppo and Prime Counseling Services Cameroon, amongst other partners, GIMA engaged in a children’s conference reaching over 200 children and caregivers with essential lessons on safety, self-esteem, and abuse prevention.

Through our Safe Space to Strength Model, we helped create a space where children felt seen, heard, and protected—while also equipping them with practical life and empowerment skills.

Together, we continue building safer, stronger communities for our children ✨

✨ Children’s Conference: SAFE, SEEN, and HEARD ✨

We recently joined other partners for a powerful Children’s Conference focused on empowering both children and caregivers with knowledge on safety, self-esteem, and abuse prevention. Our message was clear: we see you, we hear you, and we are committed to keeping you safe.

🔑 Key Highlights
• Safe Touch Awareness: Children learned to distinguish between safe touches (like a shoulder hug) and unsafe touches (such as contact with private parts without consent).
• Building Self-Esteem: Every child was reminded of their uniqueness, beauty, and worth—beyond anyone else’s opinions.
• Understanding Child Abuse: We explored different forms of abuse, including sexual abuse and child labor, while emphasizing children’s rights and the importance of speaking up.
• Safety Strategies: Children identified trusted adults and safe spaces, while caregivers were encouraged to practice active listening and support open communication.

💡 Key Takeaways
• Create safe, judgment-free spaces where children feel comfortable expressing themselves
• Listen, acknowledge, and validate children’s feelings—and seek help when needed

👉🏼Next Steps
We are committed to integrating these lessons into our school programs, building a culture where every child feels safe, seen, and heard.

✨CHILDREN’S RETREAT 2.0✨

Our childhood forms the foundation of our adult lives. Often, the trauma we struggle to overcome as adults originates from our early years.

As a mental health organization, the majority of cases we handle stem from unaddressed childhood trauma. Recognizing the importance of addressing these deeply rooted issues early, we are proud to be part of CHILDREN’S RETREAT 2.0, organized by the Presbyterian Church Small Soppo Buea in partnership with Prime Counselling Services - PCSC and The Advocate Humanitarian Foundation.

With this year’s theme, “Safe, Seen, and Heard,” the program will provide a supportive and engaging environment where children can feel secure, express themselves freely, and receive guidance as they navigate their developmental years. As we prepare to welcome over 200 children, inclusivity remains a priority—children with disabilities are fully considered, and the environment has been made comfortable and accessible for all.

We remain committed to building resilient mindsets across all ages and communities.

In commemoration of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

GIMA, in partnership with Prime Counselling Services - PCSC and DIBA Holistic Wellness Care , hosted an interactive discussion on CRTV Radio, yesterday, 22 April, on the topic:

“FROM HARM TO HEALING: Understanding the Emotional Toll of Sexual Harassment.”

In a society where sexual assault is often normalized, raising awareness, providing knowledge, and empowering informed decision-making are essential steps in addressing sexual harassment. Beyond the act itself, sexual harassment leaves survivors feeling scared, frustrated, and confused—often causing them to respond in ways that may not reflect their true needs or allow them to fully function freely among other members of society.

During this discussion, we focused on:
📌 Educating the public on what sexual harassment is
📌 The immediate emotional effects of sexual harassment
📌 How being sexually harassed affects one’s mental health
📌 The legal frameworks in Cameroon for addressing sexual harassment
📌 The role and importance of education and awareness in tackling sexual harassment

As we concluded, we left listeners with this powerful message:

“Sexual harassment is not just a momentary act it has lasting emotional and psychological effects. As a society, we must listen to survivors, support their healing, and actively work to prevent harassment by promoting respect, accountability, and empathy in all spaces.”

✨PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT ✨

Every mother deserves care that goes beyond the physical. At Pregnant Woman Smile Initiative, they are dedicated to supporting pregnant women through education, emotional care, and community outreach across Buea and its surrounding communities.

We believe maternal mental health is just as important as physical health. A mother’s emotional well-being directly affects her pregnancy, her baby’s development, and the strength of her family.

So far, they have reached and supported pregnant women and nursing mothers across two health centers and communities—making a meaningful difference, one life at a time.

Today, we are excited about our partnership with Pregnant Woman Smile Initiative PWSI (PWSI) which will help us expand our reach and deepen our impact. Through this collaboration, we will provide timely, professional ther**eutic and psychosocial support to women during one of the most vulnerable and transformative stages of their lives.

By prioritizing maternal mental health, we are:
✔️ Reducing anxiety, depression, and stress
✔️ Promoting healthier pregnancies and outcomes
✔️ Building stronger families and communities

Together, we can ensure that no woman goes through pregnancy alone.

🌱Join us. Support us. Share the message.🌱

JOIN IS TOMORROW FOR A TIMELY DISCUSSION ON:

“Healing the Invisible Wounds: How R**e Affects Identity, Self-Worth, and Body Image”

👉🏼Conversations around r**e must be approached with deep psychological sensitivity because the impact goes far beyond physical harm. Survivors often experience profound disruptions in their sense of identity, struggle with self-worth, and develop a complicated relationship with their own bodies. These are not visible wounds, yet they shape how individuals see themselves and interact with the world.

Speaking about this topic with care helps create safe spaces where survivors feel heard, believed, and supported rather than judged or blamed. It also reduces stigma, which is one of the biggest barriers to healing. When society responds with empathy and understanding, it empowers survivors to begin reclaiming their identity and rebuilding their confidence.

This discussion is important because awareness leads to action. It encourages better mental health support systems, informs trauma-sensitive care, and pushes communities to protect, validate, and uplift survivors. Healing is possible—but it begins with conversations rooted in compassion and a commitment to meaningful change.
