What Exactly Is Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy? Can It Really Treat Cancer? 🎗️💙
When people are diagnosed with a tumor, their first reaction is often: Do I need surgery? Do I need chemotherapy?
In fact, beyond the "three main carriages" of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, there is another treatment approach that is playing an increasingly important role—minimally invasive interventional therapy for tumors. It does not require major open surgery or general anesthesia, causes minimal bleeding, and can precisely attack tumors through a wound the size of a needle tip.
Two Major Ways: Vascular Intervention vs. Non-Vascular Intervention
🔹 Vascular Intervention: Cutting Off the Tumor's "Food Supply"
Using blood vessels as a pathway, a catheter is guided to the artery supplying the tumor to do two things:
"Poisoning": Directly inject high-concentration chemotherapy drugs to kill cancer cells
"Cutting off supplies": Inject embolic agents to block the feeding blood vessels
The combination of both causes the tumor to become ischemic and necrotic. The advantage is that the drug concentration is several times higher than that of systemic chemotherapy, while side effects are greatly reduced. It is mainly suitable for intermediate and advanced liver cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc.
🔹 Non-Vascular Intervention: Directly "Eliminating" the Lesion
Without going through blood vessels, a needle is directly inserted into the tumor under imaging guidance:
Cryoablation (argon-helium knife): Ultra-low temperature "freezes the tumor into an ice block"
Radioactive seed implantation: "Micro-nuclear warheads" are planted into the tumor, continuously emitting radiation to kill cancer
Thermal ablation (radiofrequency/microwave): High temperature causes the tumor to coagulate and become necrotic, achieving a radical effect comparable to surgical resection for early tumors smaller than 3 cm
The trauma is extremely minimal, it can be completed under local anesthesia, and patients can get out of bed within a few hours after the procedure.
Which Cancers Can It Treat?
It mainly targets solid tumors: liver cancer (most widely used), lung cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, gynecological tumors, liver metastases, etc. It is not suitable for blood system cancers or advanced cancers that have already spread extensively throughout the body.
Can It Achieve a Cure?
For early-stage small tumors (< 3 cm), ablation can achieve a radical effect comparable to surgery; for intermediate and advanced stages, it is more about controlling the disease, prolonging survival, and creating opportunities for surgery. Interventional therapy is often used in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, etc., forming a "combination punch."
Minimally invasive intervention is not omnipotent. Professional doctors need to make a comprehensive assessment based on the tumor's location, size, and the patient's physical condition.
Using a "needle" instead of a "knife," and "precision" instead of "broad carpet "bombing"—opening a new door to survival for patients who cannot undergo surgery or cannot tolerate radiotherapy and chemotherapy. 💪
