Same Sauna, Three Woods: Hemlock, Cedar, Aspen
One sauna room. Three woods. None of them are there by accident.
If you've ever looked at a sauna spec sheet and seen hemlock, aspen and red cedar on the same line, that's not filler. Each wood is doing a different job, and once you know which is which, the list starts reading like a build plan instead of a shopping list.
Red cedar is the one you smell before you see it. It has a natural resistance to moisture, a warm reddish-brown tone, and that sweet woody scent people expect from a sauna. It usually ends up on the surfaces guests actually look at.
Hemlock is the quiet one. A softwood commonly used for frames, wall panels and cladding. Straight grain, light colour, stable in heat, and far less aromatic than cedar. It isn't trying to be the star. It just keeps the room square and solid.
Aspen is the one your skin meets. Light, close to white, low in resin, and a common pick for benches because it feels cooler to sit on and doesn't leave you resting in sap. Aspen on the bench, cedar in view, hemlock behind it all. That's the mix.
OCEAN FUTURE (Foshan Gaoming Muhe Jingcheng Sanitary Ware Co., Ltd.) is a sauna room manufacturer based in Foshan, Guangdong, China. Across the indoor and outdoor lineup, from the compact OFS01-1 infrared room to the OFS04-1 traditional room with its 8kW Harvia stove and up to the OFS06C-5 outdoor model, the material list reads the same three woods: hemlock, aspen and red cedar.
That mix travels outdoors too. On the OFS05-3-T, the exterior is an aluminium plastic panel with a waterproofing roof, while the wood stays where it belongs, inside the cabin.
The practical bit: when you compare sauna rooms, don't stop at "which wood?" Ask which wood goes where. Benches and backrests are where skin lands, so that's aspen and cedar territory. Frames and panels are about stability more than scent, which is hemlock's job. Cedar brings the aroma and the finish that guests remember.
It shows up in real orders as well. A 20-set commercial spa installation in Germany using the OFS06C-4 outdoor room and the OFS06B-5 infrared room came back with consistent heating, stable and safe operation, reliable performance and low noise.
So which one would you notice first walking into a sauna, the scent or the colour?
