Cranberry effective against UTI
A recent study by researchers from Bond University, the University of Helsinki, and Helsinki University Hospital suggests that drinking cranberry juice can significantly lower the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The study, using a network meta-analysis of 20 trials involving 3,091 participants, found that cranberry juice consumption reduced UTI incidence by 54% compared to no treatment and by 27% compared to a placebo.
This reduction also correlated with a 59% decrease in antibiotic use, highlighting cranberry juice as a promising non-drug intervention for UTI management. The researchers emphasize the importance of such interventions amidst increasing antibiotic resistance and suggest that cranberry juice could alleviate the clinical and financial burden associated with UTI treatments
