It all began in 2007, when a group of Berlin students came up with the idea of ​​creating a day to highlight the diversity and importance of fruit. Since then, the day has been celebrated worldwide—though Berlin remains the place where the initiative originated. Young people from SOS-Kinderdorf Berlin; for years, with educational guidance, they have launched the vote for the "Fruit of the Year" at the start of the year. This year, the date took the top spot.

The date is more than just a sweet fruit; it is a symbol of hospitality, fertility, and prosperity, and has been a dietary staple in arid regions like North Africa and the Middle East for millennia.
