Best merienda chocolate from Davao City and black rice suman from Tupi palengke!

was recently at women's event in Davao City hosted by .philippines !

Thank you DTIfor bringing everyone together, it was an eye opener for me to be on the table with the women of  Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). There are two autonomous regions in the Philippines

The first, BARMM is an operational and legal entity that replaced the ARMM in 2019, now with its own parliament, chief minister, and independent control over its budget and resources.

This region consists of five provinces: Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Tawi-Tawi with regional capital in Cotabato City.

🌄 The second autonomous region is Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) in northern Luzon, whose function is more administrative than complete separation then national government.

BOOK 2. Clarence-Smith, William Gervase. Cocoa and Chocolate, 1765-1914 (NY: Routledge, 2000).

📘 This book looks at the history of cocoa cultivation, trade, and chocolate consumption over 1-1/2 centuries, a period which the author calls a ‘black hole’ in the history of commodities.

💰 This is because of a lack of understanding of the relation of economic liberalism during this time, and poverty in cocoa growing countries.

🔎 The study is born out of his conviction that cocoa production is NOT ‘a cause of underdevelopment in the Third World’, instead it should be improving the lives of cocoa producers.

🔫 Book 2 is set between two global conflicts: the Seven Years' War (1765) between Great Britain and France, and WW1 (1914) when increasing mechanization was giving rise to a different form of production and consumption in the 20thC. There are methodological and epistemological differences between Books 1 and 2 worth noting:

🏭 BOOK 1 about the rise of Cadbury factories, is traced through the actions of individuals, workers, companies, etc. BOOK 2 frames agency in terms of commodity chains.

🚢 BOOK 2 outlines change due to cocoa bean taxes; mechanization of chocolate manufacturing; environmental exploitation vis-a-vis land ownership; and 'cartelization' not only of planters in the tropics but also Western firms to manipulate cocoa bean prices.

📚 With Appendices, Bibliography, Index totalling almost 90 pages long, it provides a sustained argument ready for verification, as all academic publications should be.

👓 Finally the author's role as educator and public intellectual determines the final shape and form of this book: Professor of Economic History of Economic History of Asia & Africa

BOOK 1. Cadbury, Deborah. Chocolate Wars: From Cadbury to Kraft - The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers (2010)

🇬🇧 The first book is about and written by a member of the clan, whose surname is associated with what would become one of the largest chocolate makers of all time, Cadbury.

📈 Deborah Cadbury attempts to write a corporate history of the family company, accounting for the actions of four generations of decision makers, until Cadbury PLC was sold to Kraft Foods Inc. after a bitter takeover battle.

🏘️ She traces the entrepreneurship, business acumen, Quaker ethics, and acts of philanthropy of the Cadbury family, the people who worked at their factories and lived at their model villages.

👨 In the final chapter of the book, Cadbury Chairman Roger Carr finalised the deal with Kraft in March 2010, in what is now known as a period of global financial crisis in 2007-2011.

📉 The longer-term consequences of this bitter takeover was not yet clear at the time of publication. It was in 2012 that Kraft segregated its groceries and snack-food businesses into two companies, which became Kraft Foods Group and Mondelez International Inc respectively.

🍔 Kraft was later bought by Heinz and become Kraft Heinz Company, judged in 2019 as a merger failure.

The reasons given were its failure to recognise the changing lifestyle choices of its customer base, which had moved from processed and packaged food to 'healthier choices' such as fresh options and organic food.

🍭 Cadbury was part of what became Mondelez, now operating in about 160 countries with an approximate annual revenue of USD26 Billion.

As a follow-up to Miki Mistrati's latest film entitled The Chocolate War (2022), it's useful to educate ourselves further about chocolate.

📚 To help in this task, we share a short list selected from more than seven years of reading on this topic. These are the top 12 books in our bibliography for

🍫 To set some parameters, we distinguish between CACAO aka cocoa beans, dealt with as crop and commodity, and CHOCOLATE in the form of drink, bar, confectionery, and even destination.

📑 Some books are framed as family histories; others view cocoa through the lens of economic history and political economy.

🔪 Still others build their case based on questions of ethics and the ties of cocoa production to forced labour and child slavery.

🍷 Some books are not about cocoa or chocolate at all, but are instead about coffee, wine, sugar, or more generally the movement of goods since the 16thC through the Spanish empire.

📖 They've been included because they explained quite well how food production and food cultures function under the pressures of nationalism, transnationalism, and globalization.

🤔 Everyone has some favourite books about chocolate, which ones are yours?

We salute the men and women like my mother who serve the Filipino people, especially those who have given their lives to protect our health, despite the political and economic stumbling blocks in their way.

😊 Thank you Wadough's for making this cake 🎂 and for an online payment system that works 🇬🇧
