Is your brain carrying more plastic than you think?
A 2025 Nature Medicine study detected microplastics and nanoplastics in human brain, liver, and kidney tissue.
The disturbing part?
Brain tissue showed far higher plastic concentrations than liver or kidney and levels appeared higher in 2024 samples than in 2016 samples.
Another 2025 review in Frontiers in Toxicology summarized what these particles may do once they reach the brain. They may:
- Cross the blood-brain barrier.
- Trigger oxidative stress.
- Impair mitochondrial energy production.
- Disrupt neurotransmitters.
- Promote protein aggregation linked with neurodegeneration.
- Affect the brain through the gut-brain axis.
The shocking part? The researchers observed the absolute highest accumulations in individuals with documented dementia diagnoses, with plastics literally deposited in cerebrovascular walls and immune cells.
From a biohacker’s perspective, this is not something to ignore.
