A Morning of Movement
Where Yoga meets Pilates

Yoga or Pilates?

Do we really have to choose?

We don’t think so.

Yoga and Pilates may have different approaches to movement, but neither is 'better' than the other. They both have a lot to offer when it comes to strength, mobility, balance, flexibility, body awareness and overall wellbeing.

And actually, they make a pretty great team.

Pilates can help you build strength, stability and control, while yoga can invite more mobility, flexibility, breath and flow. But there’s plenty of crossover too — and the beauty is in discovering what each practice brings to *your* body.

So rather than choosing sides, why not try both?

Join Dionne and Marie for "A Morning of Movement"

Two experienced teachers with a combined 55 years of personal practice and 31 years of teaching between them. We offer you a relaxed and enjoyable opportunity to experience both yoga and Pilates, learn a little about what makes each practice unique, and most importantly, just move your body!

No need to be a “yoga person” or a “pilates person”. Maybe you've never tried either, well now is your opportunity.

Just come as you are, move your body, try something different and see what you enjoy.

On total eclipse day, for my yogis, here's the translation for the sun salutation mantras.

Today's yoga practice was a little challenging... For different reasons. Who doesn't love Dotty though 🥰

Early on in my yoga teaching journey, a student commented after class that she'd never been in a class where the teacher 'talked so much" 🥺. That she was more familiar being in classes with lots of silence so they could turn their awareness inwards and just be in the postures without distraction. And I completely get that.

Obviously that made me question myself, question my teaching. But I am who I am, so I never stopped, cueing, instructing, verbally guiding, offering variations. Offering moments of total nonsense (because brain and mouth don't always coordinate).

These days, most that come to my classes tell me they value those verbal cues and explanations. After 12 years of teaching I'm probably not going to hold classes that contain more silence than words. However these days I've found my cues are more about inviting awareness to sensations, to the breath, to the space, to the areas of resistance, to the moment.

Yes, obviously I still cue the movement, as we all need to know where we're going. And I still give suggestions of how we can get 'more' from the pose (think more length, strength, stability), and I also suggest how we can pull back, to soften. But mostly I find my cueing about bringing awareness to the experience. And yes, there is a little more silence so you can enjoy that.

So if you're worried about starting yoga because you're not flexible enough or strong enough, why not just come and experience the sensations, right where you're at.

This week I asked at one of my classes "I'm curious, what do you get out of your yoga practice, why do you come to class?"

Yoga goes much deeper than movement and breath work, but this is what I've always led with, so I was expecting answers such as 'more flexibility, more strength, general overall well-being '.

Instead, I heard
🔹 A chance to get out of my busy head
🔹 A time to connect with myself
🔹 Routine
🔹 More space and a time to 'just be'
🔹 Because my surgeon told me I should (this one made me giggle, but she did go on to say how much improved she felt as a result of the practice.

These answers filled me with joy as this 👆🏻 is what we should get from our practice. Yes, mobility, flexibility, strength are also great benefits, but I think of these more as positive side effects.

If you're interested in any of these benefits or the side effects, reach out for class info.
