Chapter 9: Jagged Edge (Excerpt)
The last soldier broke and ran. Panic ruined his stride as the exo-rig caught and amplified every desperate movement.
He made it five more metres before his knees went, collapsing into a heap of twisted metal beside a ruined panel. He dragged himself forward with one hand while the braces around his torso whined and locked. The bands gripped hard enough to bruise. Fibre bundles ran along his limbs like synthetic sinew, a control spine shifting beneath torn fabric. Below the waist, reinforced legs kicked uselessly against the broken glass.
Finn dropped to one knee. Moonlight caught the chest plate, flashing the ringed skull of Hyperion Dynamics back at them.
‘Recon frame,’ Finn said. ‘Cheap field issue. One of Summers’s early batches.’
The face behind the cracked head guard was young. Too young for the word soldier. Blood ran from his mouth as shock hollowed him out, leaving only disbelief.
