I love the “Hollywood” enthusiasm of Nurse Amy and this series because conversations like this are brought to light. Too many families miss out on having this specific insight because they wait too long to call for help from hospice or death doulas. It’s never too early to call a doula, palliative or hospice team and ask questions.

Families (both by blood and chosen) find themselves doing their best with little experience or education on the dying process and what to expect.

there is a specific kind of quiet that lives in the space where a relationship used to be.

for a long time i saw estrangement only as a loss. but i am learning it is actually a room. it is a place where we can finally breathe without the weight of carrying what was never meant to be held.

not a void but a sanctuary.

grief is not always about what is gone. sometimes it is about the energy we spent trying to keep a bridge from collapsing. when we finally stop holding up the weight, our hands feel strange in the lightness. they feel empty until we realize they are finally free.

not all love ends in a bridge. some ends at the riverbank where you stop wrestling with the clay. it hurts to let the mud fall but it is the only way to see your own hands again. it is the only way to realize that open palms stay clean.

i wrote this for anyone sitting with an empty chair this season. on the quiet ripening of peace and the freedom that only arrives after the loss.

After thirty years in the rooms where life begins to fade, I’ve learned to read a very specific kind of silence. It’s a silence that is heavy, un-optimizable, and most importantly entirely biological.

But right now, the tech world is trying to apply the laws of silicon to the laws of the soul. In a recent piece, I share the story of two elders:

* Arthur, for whom AI was a liberation, returning his voice and his agency.

* Eleanor, who nearly faded away because a “smart” dashboard told her family she was fine while she was actually in heart failure.

The machine is a magnificent calculator, but it is deaf to the nuance of human suffering. It can track a pulse, but it cannot witness a spirit. If we aren’t careful, we will build a world where our parents are monitored constantly but witnessed rarely.

We cannot replace the neighbor’s knock with data.

Intergenerational living is having a comeback! Loving this

co-living is the most common sense way to age out of isolation and into a circle of care and connection. We can choose relatives or chosen family, but making these decisions early before any care crisis is important.

Let’s Start normalizing these conversations with ourselves and aging loved ones. Over time there is less and less resistance. The nursing home model is broken. Time to create a new model, one family and granny at a time :)

There is a specific kind of silence found only in a room of healing, a vibrating, living quiet where the door to the world is slightly ajar, but the door to the unknown is equally close.

In this “thin place,” the labor of mending eventually meets the quiet grace of letting go. Whether the path leads back to the busy streets or toward a different horizon, how we hold that space matters.
