Ok, let’s talk about the Hyperactive Archetype.
This somatic archetype is very familiar to me as I grew up with many “hyperactives” around me—and please note, here we are talking about the somatic archetype, not the hyperactivity disorder— and I have certainly been one myself for many years. As I re-read all the big qualities for this archetype, I am noticing how much work I have done on myself to transform these adaptations. Little celebration and a reminder that we can transform. These adaptations play an important role as we navigate our early worlds—often making them more bearable—, but as we seek richer and fuller lives, deeper intimacy, vulnerability, visibility, and satisfaction in life, we are invited to overcome and transform them. Sometimes life demands it with an authoritative and compelling push… sometimes outright kick in the buttocks.
A somatic archetype is basically how the body learns to adapt, protect, armour itself to survive life. If your body adapted to the Hyperactive archetype, your main somatic signature is that your stay busy to avoid feeling. They tend to avoid silence, rest, and emotional intimacy. Does quiet or silence suddenly feel oppressive? That can be a good hint. “Hyperactives” have high physical energy, while also having gut tension. Their eyes are over alert. They can be overly cheery, and smile even when they are angry. You know when you tell your friend something that really sucks, that inwardly makes you rage, but you say it with a beautiful curated smile?
The hyperactive struggles with doing nothing, ambiguity, and rest. I remember how angry it would make me when someone would stay ambiguous about setting up a time to meet. Couldn’t they just make a decision!!??? Ambiguity would drive me insane.
