This week at the clinic we’ve been getting creative using leaves from the trees to create art.

A fun activity whilst also supporting:

🍃 Sensory experiences- touching the leaves and glue with hands, getting a little messy.
🍃 Hand eye co-ordination skills when sticking the leaves to the paper.
🍃 Bimanual dexterity skills- one hand holding objects whilst the other hand uses the glue stick.
🍃 Language- talking about the activity.
🍃 Regulation- a calming activity.

✏️ My child struggles with writing — could Occupational Therapy help?
Writing is actually a much more complex skill than it looks!
When a child finds handwriting difficult, we look beyond simply whether their writing is “neat”. Occupational Therapists consider many of the underlying skills needed to write comfortably and successfully, including:
✋ Fine motor skills and pencil control
👀 Visual-motor integration
🧠 Motor planning
💪 Hand strength and endurance
🪑 Posture and core stability
📏 Letter formation, size and spacing
🎯 Attention and regulation
😣 Whether writing causes discomfort or fatigue
And sometimes the difficulty isn't purely physical.
Speech and Language Therapists may support the language behind written work — organising ideas, sentence construction, vocabulary, phonological awareness and understanding the relationship between sounds and letters.
This is why working as a multidisciplinary team can be so valuable. 💛
At Shine Child Development, our Speech & Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists work together to understand why a child is finding something difficult and what support will make the biggest difference.

Autism & ADHD Assessments now available in Andalucía 🧠✨
We are delighted to be partnering with Gold Standard Psychological Assessments to bring specialist Autism and ADHD assessment services to children, adolescents and adults across Andalucía.
Through our partnership, families can now access comprehensive, evidence-based neurodevelopmental assessments delivered by an experienced multidisciplinary team, with Shine Child Development providing the local base here on the Costa del Sol.
Assessment pathways include:
🧩 Autism assessments
🧠 ADHD assessments
💛 Combined Autism & ADHD assessments
👧 Children and adolescents
👩 Adults, including those seeking a later diagnosis
The assessment process can include developmental history, recognised assessment tools such as ADOS, liaison with education, Speech and Language Therapy input, multidisciplinary discussion and a comprehensive feedback process, depending on the assessment required.
We are particularly pleased to be able to offer families in Spain access to this specialist service without needing to travel abroad.

Back to school doesn't have to mean straight back into pressure 🎒
As children return to school, it can take a little time for communication, attention and regulation to settle back into the school routine.
You might notice your child:
• is more tired or emotional after school
• finds following instructions harder
• struggles to tell you about their day
• needs more downtime than usual
• finds the change in routine difficult
This doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. The beginning of term places lots of additional demands on children.
Give them time, keep routines predictable and remember that communication is often easier when a child feels regulated and secure.
And if you have ongoing concerns about your child's speech, language, communication, sensory or developmental needs, our team at Shine is here to help.

“Just five more minutes!” ⏰
Moving from one activity to another can be genuinely difficult for some children — particularly when they are deeply engaged in something they enjoy.
Rather than repeatedly saying “Come on, it’s time to go!”, giving a clear and predictable warning can make transitions much easier.
Try:
⏰ Give a 5-minute warning
🗣️ Use the same simple language each time
5️⃣ Use a visual timer or countdown
➡️ Tell your child what is happening next
💛 Allow a little processing time
For example:
“5 more minutes of Lego, then shoes on.”
Visual supports and social stories can also help children understand what is expected before the situation happens.
Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference. 💛

Getting ready for back to school 🎒
Returning to school after the long summer break can be exciting, but for some children the change in routine can feel overwhelming.
Simple visual supports can make a big difference. A visual timetable can help children to:
✨ Understand what is happening next
✨ Prepare for changes and transitions
✨ Develop independence
✨ Reduce anxiety around routines
✨ Support understanding and communication
At Shine Child Development, we believe communication is about much more than spoken words. Visuals, gestures, signs, AAC and other supports can all form part of a child’s individual communication system.
As September approaches, gradually reintroducing familiar routines and using visuals to show what the day will look like can help make that transition a little easier.
